Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Durrell Hearns. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Durrell thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
I learned my crafts of writing and stand up comedy the best way possible…by doing them. Writing has always been a passion of mine since I was a kid. I loved creating worlds and scenarios for people to experience. Writing gave me the power to believe in myself and inspire others to do the same. Stand up comedy is fun to me because it is challenging. It reminds me of a hiking trail you never see the end of because it always changes. It took me a long time to find me “funny” because I wanted to be original. Originality takes time to flourish.
Something I would have done to speed up the learning process is to listen to constructive criticism a little more and not listen to people who want me to fail.
The skills that were essential to learning the craft is adaptability, resilience, belief in God, and ability to learn. You would be surprised the betrayal you can receive from people when you follow your dreams.
The obstacles that stood in the way of learning more is I had a severe concussion which hindered me from using my brain properly. It was tough not stuttering and remembering jokes but God is good.

Durrell, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Durrell Hearns. I am stand up comedian and best selling author. I have four books available on Amazon and Barnes and Noble. My self-help books have helped many people around the world find their voice. I recently wrote a fiction named Must Be Spy. It is a spy novel with a twist. It has had great reviews and will have a sequel come out soon. My goal is to improve Innovate and empower. Through my stories and my jokes.

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
My resilience is my superpower. From being a bomb loader in the Air Force to fighting PTSD in the civilian world but keeping a pure heart. The creative journey has been a wild one. It has it rewards and has it’s equal parts betrayal and backstabbing. I have met many of the nicest people in the world and some of the most miserable people in the world. I’ve had people try to steal my personality and some that wanted to help me. The ones the wanted to break me have been compromised spiritually and will never be happy. Which in the end God is Good. Which empowers me to keep going and inspiring greatness.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding thing about being a creative is the wonderful people you meet! I love good hearted people!
