We were lucky to catch up with Chasnie Houston recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Chasnie thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
Coming from an artistic/ musically inclined family I knew I was going to end up being one or thee other. An actress or a singer. I would ask my mom if I could go to her acting classes with her when I was 5-6 years old and the first time I went and saw my mother reading lines and performances etc I knew then this is what I want to do. I was bitten by the stage bug Lol! I would literally beg my mom to go to acting classes with her, I eventually started reading lines with the actors and had officially become the youngest actor in the class Lol! 😂 6 years old and everyone else is 20-40 years old but I loved it and knew then I wanted to be an actress.
Chasnie, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I owe it to my mother actually. She literally put her dream and gift on her hold to support my acting career. When she discovered I had a hunger and a gift in acting she dropped everything she had going on and started me on my journey of becoming my dream.
As time went on putting in the work and as I grew as an artist I started booking co & guest star roles. Booked my first co star role in the series “Containment “. I was over the hill excited about booking a co star role. I was 11 years old. I had to audition twice for that role , had a callback the next day and by the time me and my mom pulled up in the driveway at home she got a call from my agent and I looked at my mom’s face and knew I had booked my audition. She said the magic words “Chasnie you booked Containment”! I cried , laughed, passed gas, leaped and screamed! lol!! It was the best feeling in the world .
You have to invest in your craft. My mom had to get me headshots every quarter, acting coaches, acting classes, voice over classes and it wasn’t cheap…ok. She sacrificed a lot so that I could be the best at what I wanted to be. It took time and commitment and let’s not forget money! lol!
When I turned 16 my mom was told by my agent Gina Henry of Mi Talent Agency in Atlanta that I would have some downtime and it would be a slow season for me because of my age. My mother was like wait a minute all this money I put into your acting career who finna have a slow season not you 😂 we moving to LA. Long story short we moved to LA 8 months later. We rented a Penske truck and drove 33.5 hours from Atlanta to LA and my career took off. It’s like it was my season for me to go and once I moved to LA it was non stop. I got a manager, 2 agents and started booking back to back and I was like wow I’m living my dream. Just to name a few I booked….All American Homecoming, White Men can’t jump, and all 4 seasons of Double Cross. That move to LA was the best move for me and I thank God for having a supportive mother that believed in me and took that risk not knowing what was going to happen but she trust God and took a leap of faith and now I’m here living my dream of a professional actress. To God be the glory!
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist or a creative is witnessing your own growth. Watching your own movie as you’re moving through life pursuing your career/dream and watching it unfold is a beautiful thing.
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
Well they can start off by supporting us! Sharing and promoting our talent, craft on social media.
When we have a show or an event like show up, buy tickets. That’s love right there.
Engage in the tv shows, movies etc so more opportunities can be created for us on more major platforms. When you watch us on national networks the rating , the views grow and the shows last longer, movies then turn into series etc
