We were lucky to catch up with Maria Moran recently and have shared our conversation below.
Maria, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Before we get into specifics, let’s talk about success more generally. What do you think it takes to be successful?
To be successful, there are qualities that are basic among people who decide to venture into the world of pastry.
It is not enough to have ideas or dreams, it is important to find the means to carry them out, and if you don’t do it, no one will do it for you.
I believe in staying focused, being creative and feel passionate about what you do, because when you love what you do, success comes by itself.
Also, a good business is not born overnight and, many times, you will have to work by trial and error so don’t give up when rough times are ahead.
If you hesitate that you are capable at any time, that will be reflected in the environment and could impact your brand.
In particular, it was difficult for me to get started because I lacked the self-confidence and I tended to compare myself to large brands that had been established for a long time, which often stopped me from starting to take orders and offer my products to new customers.
I had to work a lot emotionally and face and deal with the difficulties that arose along the way, but since I love what I do, I began to train myself more, I approached the experts and learned from them, and I opened myself up to learn everything I could, and I did.
It is good to accept constructive criticism in order to improve, just as I had to keep an open mind and to this day, I try to always stay updated.
I also gained confidence and security, I began to offer my product on social media, I took risks by getting involved in all the activities around my community, I lost my fear and finally began to grow.
Nothing is what it seems. Until you try it, you won’t know if something can work.
My best advice for all the who want to start a business is that -the best entrepreneurs are those who start real businesses and who never give up trying. If you have an idea, make it happen!-
Maria, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is María Moran, I’m originally from Venezuelan (Caracas) but lived in Maracaibo for a long time.
I am an architect by profession, a teacher by vocation, and a pastry chef by passion and by heart. Arome was born, amid the uncertainty of the pandemic back in 2020 and because of my husband’s illness at the time. I felt like trying something new.
Arome is the proof of resilience and creativity in challenging times. Our success started when we left behind the the fear of the unknown.
Once people started trying our product, they recommended us and little by little we have grown. It has been a path fuller of satisfaction than obstacles.
I adore the bakery and pastry world, especially doing personalized cakes while innovating the baker market by applying baking techniques to create cakes, bread, desserts, cookies, mini desserts, and more.
Our focus is Venezuelan gastronomy, and we have formed a trajectory that has been known for our flavors and for creating different pastry products with excellent presentation. We are proud of everything we have learned; we constantly train ourselves to offer exceptional quality products that make a difference—always thinking about growing. We are grateful for people’s reception and for allowing us to grow and be part of their homes. The challenge is to be better every day and offer excellent quality in our products and services.
How’d you meet your business partner?
My business partner is actually my husband, we met back in 2015 while I was living in Puerto Rico and we instantly knew this was the path we wanted to follow together, he helps me a lot and I’m grateful for our partnership every day!
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
Word to word recommendation has been our best source of clients. We started with friends and family, and they spread the word. My best advertising is a satisfied customer!
