We were lucky to catch up with Sherron Mosley recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Sherron, thanks for joining us today. Risk taking is something we’re really interested in and we’d love to hear the story of a risk you’ve taken.
Around the age of 35 I was in trying to figure out what direction I wanted to go in career wise. I loved the job I had but I realized that I had reached my peak at my current position. I didn’t want to move up in the company and I didn’t want to switch to a different department. So, I had to look at what direction I wanted to in career wise. So, I decided to take a risk and switch careers and I got my real estate license in 2022. It turned out to be a great career move. It has its ups and downs but it has opened a lot of doors for me.
Sherron, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am a real estate agent, Transportation Specialist at The Potters House of Dallas, I am also a City Councilman in Glenn Heights. As a City Councilman i have been able to see the change that you can bring a city and to its people. As a city councilman it allows me to be a part of meetings and go to places that I wouldn’t normally be aware or apart of. I am able to speak for the smaller cities that wouldn’t normally have a voice. I am able to interact with the citizens and hear what their concerns are and see what I can do to try and fix those problems. Not coming from a political background, it gives me a unique perspective. I am able to view things more from a citizen’s aspect rather than a political view. I love being able to bring change into people’s lives and fix problems that they can’t.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
Starting a business, we all wish for a smooth journey, executing our plans flawlessly from A-Z without issues, but reality often differs. When I entered the real estate industry and obtained my license in 2022, I was already employed full-time, earning a decent income. With my new license, I managed to close a few deals within the first months. This success gave me a financial buffer, leading me to leave my job and pursue real estate full-time. However, this decision was detrimental to my growth. I should have conducted more research on the housing market, sought a CPA for financial management, and learned about investment strategies. Had I done this before leaving my stable job, I would have understood the inconsistency of real estate. My initial success made me overconfident, and I mistakenly believed it would last indefinitely. After a year, the need for a stable income forced me to return to my 9-5 job. Entrepreneurship involves making numerous mistakes and learning from them. A key lesson is to not let pride hinder progress and to understand that sometimes, stepping back and starting anew is necessary. There’s no shame in it, as long as you keep your ultimate goal in sight.
Can you talk to us about how your side-hustle turned into something more.
I often use Lyft as a side hustle. Initially, Lyft was just a means to earn some quick cash when necessary. However, after driving with Lyft for about five years, it has funded many significant expenses. Lyft has covered most of my major vacations and numerous fees associated with Real Estate and other obligations. In fact, working full-time with Lyft can be quite profitable.
