We recently connected with Jon & Joel Flynn, Wall and have shared our conversation below.
Jon & Joel, appreciate you joining us today. Can you share an important lesson you learned in a prior job that’s helped you in your career afterwards?
I’m an Audio Engineer by trade and I used to run sound for concerts when I graduated from school. I learned quickly that the technical skills are important but your people skills and the way you interact with artists, management and fans is equally or more important. Creating and maintaining relationships in this industry is incredibly important and I’ve seen firsthand how mistreating people and situations can backfire and hinder the success that’s being sought.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
We used to work retail together in LA when we started writing songs together back in 2014. Our mutual love of British Invasion bands like the Beatles and The Kinks as well as the Glam movement that spawned David Bowie and T. Rex is what initially drove us to start working together. We’ve released five full length LP’s since then, started a record label / recording studio (Green Door Studios) and have had our music featured in television. Our music has been described as everything from power pop to garage to psychedelic and we are proud to stand apart from the multitude of bands out there by always pushing for new sounds and not adhering to listener expectations.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
Being a creative (in our case song writers) is a gift and a curse. A gift because we’re able to express ourselves freely through our lyrics and compositions and hopefully inspire and relate to other people all over the world. A curse because for the majority of us there’s no money in this endeavor. It’s nearly impossible to support yourself and a family without other sources of income. We both work regular jobs to pay bills which is a necessary if not glamorous reality.

How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
These days there are several ways to support bands / song writers / artists:
– Show up in person. Go to a concert, gallery opening or record release event.
– Purchase works online, for us we have our webstore on bandcamp where we have vinyl records, cds and cassettes for sale.
– Share, like and comment on social media posts. This is how most people get their news in today’s age and this is the best place to get the word out about your favorite band or artist.
