We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Dave Wurtzel. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Dave below.
Dave, appreciate you joining us today. What sort of legacy are you hoping to build. What do you think people will say about you after you are gone, what do you hope to be remembered for?
I think for anyone who works as a filmmaker, our legacy is the body for work we leave behind. Hopefully people see compassionate films about the human condition. Whether it’s my documentary work, broadcast, or even wedding films.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I started out working as an assistant recording engineer in a few prominent studios in New York. I love creating music, and recording it. However I quickly learned that a lifelong career in that field would be a difficult roadmap. It was during a time when recording became very accessible at home, for low cost. Meaning recording studios were shutting down left and right. So I made the decision to pivot to filmmaking. A decade later I can say I’ve found my true passion and am proud to have fifteen Boston Emmy Awards, 2 Robert R. Murrow Awards, and a POY Award of Excellence for Documentary Storyteller of the Year (2023). I work full time shooting documentaries and broadcast television programs for the PBS / NPR affiliate in Connecticut and also run my own production company which produces music videos, wedding films, and documentaries.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
Yes absolutely! Today, the most popular way stories are told is by way of visuals. For me – being honest, intentional, and authentic is key. My work is built on a creative spirit that continues to inspire an original approach to each project.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
I think for me it’s meeting new people and experiencing new things. Being a filmmaker means getting to know people, having in depth conversations on topics that matter – both to the subject, and the world. This has made me a more knowledgeable person, and hopefully in turn a better filmmaker.
