We caught up with the brilliant and insightful RARI RA a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
RARI, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
I was in middle school, in my math class selecting courses for high school. I’ve always been interested in music production for as long as I can remember. Making beats on my phone in the middle of class or free styling with my friends. I saw a music production class as an option for electives and as soon as I saw it I knew it was an opportunity I had to take. Within the first year I already learned a lot about production, writing and engineering. Before freshman year ended I decided to become an artist.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I got into music just by listening to it. Wondering how people made the endless sounds you can hear in songs. Music also had a big impact on me mentally and emotionally. I love expressing an emotion or a vibe through a song, I think its the rawest form of expressing what you feel, what’s on your mind, or what you been through. I started off making beats for other artist and people in my circle. Now I make music for myself. I do almost everything when creating a song, production, recording, engineering… I’m always trying to push boundaries, catch peoples’ ear with music that sounds different from everyone else. Pushing boundaries is important but my main goal is to bring a listener into my creative universe, my image, my sound. I’m proud of the way I evolve as an artist. I’m not afraid of doing new things or taking new ideas. I want my fans to know that I’ve always done music for my passion.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
At first I felt like I had a point to prove. Everybody had to know that I can make great music. But after my best friend died, I wanted to do it for him. He provided me with the software I needed to make music on my own and he always believed in me. I wanted us to come up together, but with him gone I want to show him that he was right to believe in my sound.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding thing about being an artist is the self gratification you get when you see how far you’ve come. Seeing how your talent and creativity grew and evolved over time is the best realization for me.
