We recently connected with Amber Robinson and have shared our conversation below.
Amber, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear the backstory of how you established your own practice.
I started my own private practice in April of 2021, just four months after I became licensed. I left a very successful practice in Beverly Hills with pretty much no direction or idea what I was doing. Needless to say, this was a huge risk, but knowing what I know now, I wouldn’t change a thing. Sure, I made some mistakes along the way, but they were all learning lessons. What I’d say to another therapist who is considering opening their own practice is “just do it.” You will never lose when you bet on yourself!
Amber, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’m an LA Native and have always been interested in psychology and human behavior. As I began to learn more, I just became more and more fascinated by the subject. I guess you could say that this field was my destiny. After practicing for a few years, I began to focus on helping millennial creatives and entrepreneurs thrive in their relationships. This also developed pretty naturally because it is my lived experience. I know healing is possible because I myself have experienced it. After practicing on my own for several years, I started A Road Through Therapy Group which is probably what I’m the most proud of.
A Road Through is a group therapy practice with skilled clinicians who will walk alongside you in your healing journey. We approach therapy not only as trained professionals but as fellow humans who have navigated our own journeys of growth and healing. Our specialties have evolved naturally from our own personal experiences, giving us a profound understanding of what is possible. At A Road Through, therapy doesn’t have to be scary. It can be fun, like a conversation with a trusted friend.
Do you think you’d choose a different profession or specialty if you were starting now?
If I could go back, I would absolutely choose the same profession. I know not everyone finds their purpose in their career, but I feel so blessed and fortunate to be able to do what I love and make an impact. Therapy is not always the easiest job, we hear trauma and hardships, but we also hear about engagements, new job opportunities and all of the little wins along the way. My absolute favorite thing to hear in session is, “I couldn’t wait to tell you this…”
Putting training and knowledge aside, what else do you think really matters in terms of succeeding in your field?
I think an underrated necessity in starting a business is courage, It may sound cliche, but you have to really believe in yourself. Even if no one else does. A lot of times, I had no idea what I was doing, but I had to have the belief in myself that I could and would figure it out. Having that courage and faith in myself was pivotal in my journey and what I attribute a lot of my success to.
