We were lucky to catch up with Sabrina Dupuis recently and have shared our conversation below.
Sabrina, appreciate you joining us today. Can you open up about a risk you’ve taken – what it was like taking that risk, why you took the risk and how it turned out?
I would say the biggest risk I’ve taken was the leap to pursue photography full-time. I had a stable corporate ‘9-5’ at the time but I just wasn’t feeling fulfilled or happy with the work I was doing.
I had always done photography, just on the side as more of a hobby. At the time, I had only had a FEW paying clients ever and really just decided to quit my job and just dive headfirst into photography. I went crazy marketing myself and just asking everyone I knew and their circle to help promote me and my work. Within just a few months, my business had over tripled and I was working a full schedule filled with just photography work!
Looking back, it was actually the wildest decision I’ve ever made, especially being such a risk adversed person. But I can proudly say, if I never took the initial step – I wouldn’t be where I am today. And now I fully support my daughter and I from my photography business!

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
For those you don’t know me – I’m a wedding & family photographer based in Maryland!
As I briefly mentioned earlier in the interview, I have kind of always had a passion for photography and grew up taking photos since I can remember. I actually took a photography class in high school and remember that being the only class I was looking forward to at times, haha! But I didn’t professionally get into the industry until about 2 and a half years ago when I pivoted from my corporate career into doing this full-time. I now mainly photograph weddings, elopements, and families and all the things in between.
My ultimate goal is to create photos you don’t just see – but feel. I take pride in my ability to connect with others and offer an experience way beyond our session. I would say this is what sets me apart the most. I don’t even really have the ability to just treat my job as business, I just truly love building relationships with my clients and making git so much more than just ‘taking your photos.’

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
I’d say the most rewarding part of being a creative for me is knowing that my ART is inspiring and helping others.
This is literally the thing that keeps me going on the tough days of running my business. I literally have a folder in my phone I keep of all the most amazing compliments or messages I’ve received from clients or other creatives in the industry.
Some people have lost people in their life and my photos are the only memory they have of them left. Or when a fellow artists reaches out and has told me how much my work has inspired them. Or just the simple fact of knowing MY art is displayed in multiple people’s home that they look at and appreciate everyday.
I could really go on about this for days, but all of this brings me the most joy!

We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
I actually basically started my business through social media and still pretty much run it through social media still.
My biggest advice is to just – start! I made my Instagram about 2 years ago and started with literally 30 followers and would keep posting and engaging with my audience as if I had thousands of people interested! Sometimes it feels silly or can be really discouraging but just remember that we all start somewhere, and to just keep going!
Don’t worry about the numbers or instant results. Keep posting your work and being authentic, and you’ll build and attract your community from there!
