We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Fiona Miller. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Fiona below.
Fiona, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. One of the things we most admire about small businesses is their ability to diverge from the corporate/industry standard. Is there something that you or your brand do that differs from the industry standard? We’d love to hear about it as well as any stories you might have that illustrate how or why this difference matters.
To stand out from the industry standard, I have made it my mission to use unique and high-quality ingredients, creating innovative product designs and packaging, that focus on eco-friendly and sustainable practices. I also offer personalized and customizable options for customers, with exceptional customer service.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Hi, my name is Fiona Miller and I’m the proud owner of Kute Kreationz, a smal business in Toronto specializing in unique and personalized Artisan Soap and Body products. Whether you’re looking for a special gift for a love one or yourself, I offer something for every skin type and condition at Kute Kreationz.

Okay – so how did you figure out the manufacturing part? Did you have prior experience?
When I first started Kute Kreationz, it was just an idea without a name. However, I could no longer stand the feel of my skin after using the well-known soap brands, and wanted to do something about it. I spent countless hours researching how to make my own soaps and found that melt and pour was the easiest because I had no idea at the time how to make it from scratch using “Lye.” After making it from personal use, I decided that it would be a great product to market, but there was one problem, I still didn’t know to make it from scratch. Needless to say, Coles bookstore bacame the life saver I needed at the time because they had a book on soapmaking.
“Melt and pours are good but from the creative aspect of things I didn’t want to cheat myself or customers out of the beautiful products I knew I’d be able to craft.”
I messed up the first few tries I attempted making it from scratch, but it was something that needed to happen for me to be where I am now. I can remember crying because the ingredients and materials cost me so much, only for the batrer to be too soft or too hard that it crumbled apart when cut. After this failed attempt I tried again and it was a success for which I was over joyed.
One of the most Important thing I learned from this was that it’s easy to give up when faced with a challenge, but it takes patience, drive, and passion to keep pushing onwards to your dream. Because of this I have created 11 different unique soaps along with custom orders, and have now stared on my body butter and lotion line. There’s just so much endless possibilities when you are determined.

Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
A book that helped me was and still does to this day is “Easy Soap Making ” by Kelly Cable. In this book, she gives information about all the different types of soapmaking, advice on how rewarding this carft can be, and an extensive list of resources that helped me as an entrepreneur.
I also had some wonderful professors in my Cosmetic Techniques and Management program at Seneca College. They are industry professionals in makeup artistry and cosmetics, so it was a huge plus for me, not only as a makeup artist but also business owner. The access I had to industry standards and other resources helped to build confidence and reinforce my passion for soapmaking.
