We were lucky to catch up with Dani Moore recently and have shared our conversation below.
Dani, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
Black Women Making Friends is a platform for Black Women to BE!
Black Women are constantly told by others who we should be or not be. There are so many negative stereotypes around of not just black women but black women being together in unity.
Our mission is simple. Prove those stereotypes wrong.
We create spaces for Black Women to be their authentic selves, surrounded by other Black Women being their authentic selves. We make room for tough conversations and self development to help break those barriers to creating life long sisterhood.

Dani, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Hi! My name is Dani Moore and I am the creator of Black Women Making Friends KC. I, along with my amazing team, put on events around the city focused on Black Women.
We began a few years ago and have recently grown to almost 5,000 members in our Facebook group. Building community isn’t fast or easy. In the beginning we had really small meetups and had to learn along the way on how to do everything correctly. Now, we have waitlists for our monthly brunches and sell out almost all of our events months in advance.
I’m extremely grateful to our beginning members who have supported through all the growing pains.
This year we were able to put on our first Black Girl Picnic on the Nelson Atkins Museum Lawn and the turn out completely blew my mind! We had HUNDREDS of Black Women from the area join together for a day of unity. That picnic was my goal when I first started this. We will be doing it again next year and hopefully even more women can make it out!
I have also been selected as a panelist for the Kansas City Conference for Women in October and I cannot wait to discuss even more of my story and our journey there along with some other amazing ladies.
If you’re interested in coming to our next event, we have Speed Besties August 17th. Think speed dating but for your bestie(s) you have been looking for! Check out our socials for more info!

We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
Our social media was a slow growing process just like the group. Our Black Girl Picnic gave a great boost to our Facebook and Instagram. Along with partnering with businesses and having influencers tag and collab on posts. You have to try different things to find what really sticks. I now know what time and day gets the most interactions and views based on our demographic. You really have to do research when understanding social media.

What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
You have to build trust before doing too much with social groups on Facebook. I know a lot of people see me putting on these large events now and being successful but I didn’t put on ticketed events until a year and a half into building the community. Building trust is so important. Now, people know I will only put on good events that are organized. They are more likely to put their money into them because there is proof (videos, photos and lots of word of mouth) about how great they are. Build that trust first.
