We recently connected with Michael Dailey and have shared our conversation below.
Michael, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
I learned by doing and being pretty bad at it at first. I’ve always had a vague interest in cameras, even since childhood, I remember begging my mom for a video camera and bringing it everywhere and trying to make little movies with my friends. It wasn’t until COVID however that I decided that I wanted to go into Filmmaking & Photography as a profession. My freshman year of high school was cut short and my sophomore year was completely online. During the first few months of quarantine, I kept myself busy watching movies and taking pictures. A few months in, I finally got my first DSLR and started learning the fundamentals of photography by watching videos, asking questions from more experienced photographers through social media, and trial and error. Post high school, I am now a freelance event videographer & portrait photographer. Portraiture is where I make most of my income, I work at a studio as well as running my own photography business.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I got into my business/artform simply out of boredom at first, and then when I found a community surrounding both of those fields, I really started to find my stride as a filmmaker and photographer. I’ve always had a vague affinity for cameras, but it wasn’t until relatively recently that I knew I wanted to do it as a career/creative outlet.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding part in my eyes is knowing when your art has had an impact on someone, no matter how big or small, even if it’s just your close friends or family.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
I would like to get to the point where my skills as a photographer will let me travel around the world and make money while doing it.
