We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Megan Sheppard . We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Megan below.
Hi Megan , thanks for joining us today. Quality control is a challenge almost every entrepreneur has had to focus on when growing – any advice, stories or insight around how to best ensure quality is maintained as your business scales?
I think that maintaining quality as your company grows is very important. The reason your company is growing is because of the tone you set when you first started. You don’t ever want to lose your significance. You want to continue to grow and evolve, not stay stuck or crumble!

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I’m a professional hairstylist that has been in the industry for 13 years. I worked at a major salon chain here in Houston, Texas for 8 years. After multiple promotions, tons of extensive training & experience all while building a wide range of clientele, I decided to take a leap and become my own boss and have my own business. I opened The M Effect Hair Studio, my own mini salon, back in 2016. I’ve literally always had a love for hair ever since I was little. I would collect mannequins and style family and friends hair all the time. It wasn’t until a friend of mine told me about Paul Mitchell the School Houston, where I decided to start my career/journey.
While attending that amazing school, where I received some of the best education in the hair industry and meeting the most wonderful people, a friend I had met told me about a salon she was interested in working in. We both interviewed & got the job. I was super excited & knew that was the beginning of my amazing career.
Fast forward to now operating my own salon, I’m so thankful for the foundation that was set and everything I’ve learned along the way. From customer service & experience to work ethic, I’m able to do what I absolutely love all while meeting amazing people & continuously building and maintaining a clientele.
I am a Hair cutting Specialist & a Colorist, that also offers Hair treatments and a range of Styles. I love being a problem solver for my clients when it comes to their hair. I always encourage them and let them know that change is good, all while walking them step by step on how to maintain their hair and recommend products specifically for their hair. I take pride in providing the best experience when my clients enter my salon. I’m a 5 Star rated Hairstylist that wants each of my clients to walk out experiencing The M Effect!
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
Referrals and Reviews have been my most effective strategy. I make a point to build a relationship with each person that sits in my chair. Some of my clients even feel like family. They trust me to give them the best service and experience. They send their family, their friends, their co workers etc. so that they too can have the same experience. I’ve had clients that have been with me my whole career & they’ve watched me grow and they want to see me continue to succeed so they tell everyone they know about me and I am so grateful for them! One of my Favorite things to do is read my reviews. From 1st time clients, to my clients that I’ve had from Day 1, I love to hear feedback and read about what kind of experience they’ve had at my salon. Reviews really help me to continue to build my clientele. It tells people who are interested in booking with me, what they can expect by choosing me as their hairstylist. Then it’s my turn to create the magic once they come!

Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
I think how personable I am with my clients help me build my reputation. I have to add my skill set as well. I came from a very busy salon before I went on my own, so I had to learn to be very time officiant while also providing a great service. The hair industry has a reputation of having you spend “all day” at the hair salon, and uniquely my experience trained me to perform otherwise. My clients are always so blown away on how fast but always officiant I am. Depending on the service you are getting, you can be out within an hour every time. That definitely comes with experience and strategy of course. But, my clients can come on their lunch breaks and be in and out which is a win/win for the both of us. I can stay booked & busy and they can come in, get a great service & be out & enjoy the rest of their day!
