We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Julian Shah-Tayler a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Julian, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
I recently released an album “Elysium” that charted the end of a prior relationship and the blossoming of a new one with all the hardships and high points documented. It was like a very intimate journal of my reactions and thoughts. The next album is the flip side. Unfortunately it’s the story of the end of that relationship…. Life must go on! 😂🤦
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’ve been making music since I was 9, composing and writing songs. I started producing my own stuff over 10 years ago. Songwriting has been my self expression and my therapy for my whole life. I also love to produce and remix other peoples’ music. I have worked with some very well known artists mostly from the UK, and find the process always creative and exciting.
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
It’s incredibly important to support artists you love by purchasing things that you like by them. Art has been devalued consistently over the last 15 years from an anticipated and cherished thing to a completely unappreciated and widely ignored medium. The shift has occurred to tech. The iPhone is now the central hub alongside social media. Music is streamed for free, which devalues it as art.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
I realized with the shift to “free” streaming music that the live experience is the only way one can make regular and measurable money through music. I perform tribute in service to this new paradigm
