We recently connected with Martavious Gayles and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Martavious thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Earning a full time living from one’s creative career can be incredibly difficult. Have you been able to do so and if so, can you share some of the key parts of your journey and any important advice or lessons that might help creatives who haven’t been able to yet?
Well, because I did know that this industry per se would be tough. I was ready for it. I started so long ago, when reality tv was a big hit back then. American Idol at the time. Was one of the hottest shows out, at the time. So I knew if I did the show, it would open up more doors and opportunities for me. So I did the show. I got to about 30 of us and then was eliminated by 25 of us. And that was on my birthday. After that, that’s when I started doing some stunt work & standin which was really fun. Then I ended up booking some guest star roles & Co stars Roles. So with that, it still pays royalties and the work I’m doing now pays royalties.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
As I stated before. I started in reality tv on American idol. And then I went from there. The opportunities did come after the show. Which was a great because I was hoping for that. Then I got signed to a great Agency and that brought me so many wonderful opportunities and bookings. I was very driven and determined to be an Actor. Going back home was not an option. So I faced some challenges like homelessness. But I believed enough in myself and God that I would see better days. And I was right.

What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
Be more supportive. People in the industry get so full of themselves sometimes. That they forget that they use to be the new guy.

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
That you have to incorporate your own style into whatever your craft is. It helps you to be comfortable with your craft. I had to unlearn trusting a lot of other actors so easily. Because some of them, They feel intimidated by you.
