We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jordan Waltz. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jordan below.
Jordan, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Do you think your parents have had a meaningful impact on you and your journey?
From a young age, my parents always told me, “If you do what you love, you’ll never work a day in your life.” As a child, I didn’t fully grasp the meaning behind those words, but I knew one thing: I loved being creative. Whether drawing, scrapbooking, painting, redesigning my room, or making things on the computer, my passion for creativity was undeniable. However, I had yet to learn how this passion would translate into a future career.
When it was time to choose a college and a major, I found myself at a crossroads. Despite my love for design and creativity, I had no concrete plan. Ultimately, I chose the first creative major I stumbled upon at Ohio University: Visual Communications: Infographics and Publications Design. Neither I nor my parents fully understood the career paths this major could lead to, but they supported me wholeheartedly. They drove me to campus for tours and interviews, allowing me the freedom to explore and figure things out on my own.
After my first year as a Visual Communications major, I began to feel uncertain. My parents noticed my unease and encouraged me to seek internships to gain real-world experience. With their support, I landed an internship that summer, which turned out to be a pivotal moment in my journey. The internship made me realize this field wasn’t the right fit.
Feeling lost once again, I had an open conversation with my parents. “What about Interior Architecture?” I suggested, intrigued by the idea of designing spaces. They immediately supported my decision, encouraging me to pursue what truly interested me. I switched majors, and with their continued support, I found my place.
Graduating with a degree in Interior Architecture & Design was a significant milestone. I secured my first job in the field and was excited to put my skills to use. However, it didn’t take long to realize that I craved a deeper creative outlet. This need for more artistic freedom led me to start a side hustle: designing paper goods through an Etsy Shop. Surprisingly, I began making more money with my side hustle than my full-time job, so I had the crazy idea to quit my job and dive into entrepreneurship.
Now, as a parent myself, I often reflect on my journey and the invaluable lessons my parents taught me. I understand the fears and concerns they must have had about my ability to support myself, yet they never wavered in their support or questioned my decisions. They trusted me to navigate my own path, even when my choices seemed uncertain.
Had my parents pressured me into pursuing a high-earning career at the expense of my passions, I know I would have been miserable. Their choice to let me explore and stay true to my creative inclinations has profoundly shaped my life. Today, as a successful entrepreneur, I attribute my achievements to the freedom they gave me to trust my gut.
Their unwavering support and belief in me allowed me to explore, make mistakes, and ultimately discover my true calling. They did everything right by giving me the freedom to make my own decisions, and I am forever grateful for that.
