We were lucky to catch up with Megan Mauk recently and have shared our conversation below.
Megan, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
I knew I wanted to pursue content creation when I was just 11 years old. Instead of doing homework right after school, I’d spend hours watching YouTube videos from my favorite creators. Any money I earned at my family’s restaurant went straight into buying new makeup, which I used in the videos I started making.
By the time I was 12, I was already making videos every week and editing them myself. That’s when my mom saw how serious I was about it. For my 12th birthday, she took me to Sam’s Club and we bought the Canon Rebel T5i, which was a big step up in quality for me. From then on, I focused on making better and more professional videos.
What started as a hobby has now become my full-time job at 24 years old. Content creation isn’t just something I do, it’s a passion that I’ve turned into my career.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
When I first started making YouTube videos, the platform was completely different from what it is today. There were no editing courses or tutorials available, so I had to learn the ropes by experimenting with editing programs through trial and error. Terms like importing, exporting, rendering, bitrate, aperture, and keyframing were initially foreign to me. I dedicated countless hours to mastering these skills, often opting to stay in and edit rather than go out with friends.
Over the years, my dedication has paid off in ways I could have never imagined. I’ve had the privilege of collaborating with prestigious brands such as FIDM, The Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising is a private college in downtown Los Angeles. where I helped create an influencer program. This opportunity took me to Los Angeles to tour the campus and meet with incredible individuals. I’ve also worked with all my favorite makeup brands, including L’Oréal Paris, NARS, and Revlon, receiving product releases for review as part of their PR campaigns.
Additionally, I’ve been fortunate enough to partner with Canon, having been gifted cameras and even presenting creator kits at VidCon. It’s been fulfilling to see these kits eventually hit retail shelves years later. Traveling across the United States to attend events in cities like Orlando, New York, and Los Angeles has allowed me to meet both brands and my supportive followers and internet friends in person. I’ve had the honor of speaking on stage alongside fellow creators—an experience that wouldn’t have been possible if I hadn’t taken that leap to create my first video.
Reflecting on my journey, I am immensely proud of how far I’ve come and the opportunities I’ve seized along the way. Each milestone has shaped not only my career but also my passion for creating content that resonates with others. I look forward to continuing this journey, connecting with my audience, and inspiring others through my work.

Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
Throughout my career as a content creator, I’ve gone through several shifts, often driven by burnout or a hunger for new challenges. It all began with beauty videos, where I shared my passion for makeup and beauty routines. From there, I moved into storytelling with my own twist, and later ventured into family vlogging, capturing our daily lives and adventures.
The next big shift came when I dove into live streaming on platforms like musical.ly and live.ly. I explored lip sync videos, live streaming slime creations, and showcasing my makeup routines in real-time. While these experiences were exciting, I eventually outgrew the format and found myself drawn to the fast-paced world of gaming content on Twitch. Streaming games like Fortnite, Valorant, and Minecraft opened up a whole new audience and community for me.
However, I realized that live streaming wasn’t quite the right fit for me in the long run. So, I pivoted again, this time focusing on short-form content. TikTok became my new playground, where I condensed my beauty tips and routines into snappy videos under one minute. This shift proved to be incredibly rewarding, as I quickly grew a dedicated following and earned verification with over 200,000 followers.
Beyond my personal content journey, I’ve also ventured into creating User-Generated Content (UGC) for brands, helping them reach their audience through creative and engaging videos that don’t always appear on my personal page.
Currently, I’m embarking on a new chapter by starting my own media company. My goal is to assist small businesses in navigating the world of social media, leveraging my experience and passion for content creation to help them thrive online.
Each pivot has been a learning experience, teaching me resilience, adaptability, and the importance of following my passions. As I continue to evolve and grow in this ever-changing industry, I’m excited about the opportunities ahead to make a meaningful impact both creatively and professionally.

We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
Building my social media audience has been about consistency, finding my niche, engaging with viewers, trying new ideas, and collaborating with fellow creators. I’ve stayed dedicated to posting regularly in my niche. whether it’s beauty tutorials or personal stories. Engaging with my audience has been key, responding to comments and fostering a community vibe. I’ve kept things dynamic by experimenting with different content formats and platforms, while collaborations have helped me reach new audiences and gain fresh insights. It’s been a journey of learning and growth, focusing on authenticity and connecting with others who share my passion for content creation.
