Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Isabel Arias. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Isabel, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear the story of how you went from this being just an idea to making it into something real.
Alright, let’s get real about how Isabel Arias Photography came to life. So, the idea was always there, simmering in the background. But after my detour into network marketing and experiencing postpartum depression, my old camera became a lifeline. It was like a lightbulb went off – photography wasn’t just a hobby; it was my therapy, my passion, my way out of a dark place.
That’s when the wheels started turning. I knew I wanted to give my photography business another shot, but this time, I wanted to do it right. So, I got down to business (literally!). First things first, I needed to practice, like, a lot. So, I offered free shoots for some old friends back in my hometown. It was a fantastic way to reconnect with familiar faces and see how much they’d grown and changed. It was also a great opportunity to get back behind the camera and rediscover my creative spark. Everyone had a blast, and I ended up with some amazing photos that perfectly captured that warm, nostalgic feeling..
Those photos became my new portfolio, and I used them to start spreading the word. With a fresh portfolio in hand, I knew it was time to take the plunge and head to Austin, the vibrant city that had become my new home. I reached out to the friends I’d made there, offering them free shoots to help me build my network and showcase my skills in a new environment. They were incredibly supportive, and their enthusiasm was contagious. They helped me spread the word through word-of-mouth, and I also started creating a ton of reels on social media to reach a wider audience (gotta get creative when you’re on a budget!).
After about a month of hustling, I finally felt ready to launch. But it wasn’t just about taking pretty pictures – I had to build a brand, define my mission, and set some serious goals. I spent countless hours researching, planning, and strategizing, all while continuing to practice and refine my skills.
And then, it happened. I launched Isabel Arias Photography, and the response was unreal! I booked out in my hometown almost immediately, and thanks to those reels I was posting, bookings started rolling in from Austin too. I even hosted some bluebonnet mini-sessions that sold out and brought in even more business.
It’s been a whirlwind ever since, and I’m honestly so grateful for every step of this journey. The time I spent away from photography, the unexpected detours, the challenges, and the triumphs—it all led me to where I am today. And I wouldn’t change a thing.
Isabel, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’m Isabel Arias, and I’m a wife, mom, and dog mom who’s totally obsessed with capturing memories. Seriously, I’ve loved taking photos since I was a kid – just ask my little sister who was my very first model. I would drag that girl out of the house for some impromptu photoshoots.
In high school, I joined the yearbook committee because I wanted to capture all those special moments (and let’s be real, I also wanted to play with their fancy cameras!). When I graduated, I got my very own professional camera as a gift, and that’s when my photography business really took off.
When it comes to my clients, I’m all about making our sessions fun and laid-back. I love it when people tell me they’re awkward in front of the camera because honestly, who isn’t? That’s why I focus less on stiff poses and more on playful prompts to get everyone relaxed and having a good time.
For example, with couples, I might have them do a staring contest. You won’t believe the genuine smiles and laughter that follow! I’m all about capturing those in-between moments, the way people connect and look at each other. I don’t want to force fake smiles; I want to capture the real you.
I want to capture couples looking at each other with so much love, families laughing and playing together, and expectant moms glowing with joy as they await their little one. That’s what makes my job so special. At the end of the day, I want my clients to feel happy and confident that I’ve captured their best photos and happiest memories. Think of me as your friend with a camera, ready to make some magic happen!
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
While my follower count may not be massive, I’m proud to have fostered genuine connections with my clients and audience. Building relationships is key in this industry, and I encourage you to put yourself out there without hesitation.
Don’t shy away from showing your personality on your stories, reels, and posts. As photographers, we often hide behind the lens, but showcasing your authentic self is crucial. When I began sharing more of my personal life on social media, that’s when I saw a significant increase in engagement. People want to know the person behind the business!
When potential clients are looking for a photographer, they’re not just evaluating your work—they’re also considering who they’ll be spending time with. It’s essential to show up as your authentic self, not just a polished professional persona. Engage with your audience, respond to comments, and build relationships.
Remember, social media algorithms are constantly changing, and while tips and hacks can be helpful, there’s no substitute for genuine connection. Networking offline is also incredibly valuable—don’t be afraid to strike up conversations and share your passion with others.
Ultimately, embracing authenticity and building relationships both online and offline will lead to the most meaningful and lasting success in your photography business
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Being a photographer isn’t just my job; it’s my passion, my creative outlet, and my way of connecting with the world. The most rewarding part is being able to freeze those fleeting moments of joy, love, and laughter, transforming them into timeless memories. Witnessing the emotions my photos evoke in my clients fills my heart with so much joy and fuels my passion for capturing the raw beauty and authenticity of life.
