We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Thom Chapman a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Thom, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you share a story about the kindest thing someone has done for you and why it mattered so much or was so meaningful to you?
As a creative all you want is to affect your audience in a meaningful and positive way.
Those times when a fan reaches back out to thank you are the most impactful and seem the most kind. Hearing from fans in the UK or Australia via email just wanting to say thank you, are a couple that come to mind….but the most impactful was seeing a post on social media of a young fan covering an old song of mine, and that really helped make all the struggles as an artist feel worth it. I remember being that age and teaching myself to play songs by other artists that were special to me…and to see that reflected back affirmed that I was doing what I set out to do.
I think artists are compelled to create art regardless of whether or not they receive validation or recognition back, but the times when you do hear from someone you’ve affected in a positive way really go a long way.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Thanks for having me, I’m Thom Chapman, an artist in both sound and vision. I’ve painted and made music for as long as I can remember. Raised amidst Beatles tunes and family bluegrass sessions, I found my calling early. Inspired by Kurt Cobain, I began writing songs in elementary, shaping my path in music ever since.
My visual arts education deepened my understanding of Fine Art and Art History, shaping my approach to both music and painting. Inspired by past artists who pushed boundaries, I aim for unique creativity while ensuring my music remains accessible, influenced by The Beatles’ timeless appeal.
My latest solo project, “Thom Chapman,” is years in the making, marking a milestone in my career. I’ve produced, recorded, and mixed all eight songs myself, aiming to realize my vision fully. I’ve also crafted the music videos, blending visuals with sound to forge a distinct artistic identity.
As an artist, I am driven by a profound connection to the enigmatic and the evocative, weaving together elements of psych pop, dream pop, and art rock to create a tapestry of sound that is both timeless and innovative. My journey as a musician is deeply influenced by the visual arts, allowing me to blend sonic textures with a vivid, almost cinematic quality that invites listeners into a realm of introspection and wonder.
My songwriting, strongly influenced by The Beatles, is a delicate balance of intricate arrangements and broadly applicable themes. The lyrics often explore the complexities of human emotion and the struggles of moving on from past relationships, wrapped in melodies that linger long after the music has stopped. The soundscapes I craft are layered with a rich blend of vintage and modern elements, from the McCartney-esque bass lines to Jonny Greenwood inspired guitar effects.
The symbols of the Cheshire Cat, White Rabbit, and Raven are integral to my artistic identity, each representing different facets of the human experience. The Cheshire Cat embodies mystery and the whimsical acceptance of life’s paradoxes, while the White Rabbit signifies the urgency of time and the curiosity that drives exploration. The Raven brings an element of somber reflection, wisdom, and transformation. Together, they create a narrative that mirrors my own exploration of the light and dark within the human psyche.
My work with bands like Fox Grin and A Co., along with my experiences as a touring guitarist for artists such as Becca Mancari and Angel Snow, has profoundly shaped my musical journey. These experiences have allowed me to refine my craft, pushing the boundaries of genre and style to create a sound that is uniquely my own.
Through my music, I strive to evoke a sense of mystery and enchantment, inviting my audience to join me on a journey through the labyrinth of the mind and the heart. My goal is to create a space where the listener can find solace, reflection, and perhaps a bit of magic, in the melodies and stories that I share.

What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
To me, artists are inherently brave, driven by compulsion to create beauty and catharsis, defying societal pressure for financial security. Culture should respect all creators, regardless of perceived talent or success. I also believe our culture and governmental policies could do more to support those individuals who pursue art…I believe art has been proven, throughout history, to help progress cultural and societal worldviews in the best humanitarian ways. Art’s intrinsic value lies in healing and connection.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
I believe in the magic of art, across all forms. The true reward is crafting something that moves and heals, shaping reality itself.
