We were lucky to catch up with Amélie Swann recently and have shared our conversation below.

Amélie , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Has your work ever been misunderstood or mischaracterized?

Having a stutter and being a musician is tough, but it’s also why I do it. (singing) “When you talk on the beat, you don’t have a problem anymore”

My entire life, I’ve struggled with my speech. It used to be something that made me feel very self conscious, but luckily I’ve gotten over that feeling and now embrace my stutter. I think it makes me a better listener which translates into being a better song writer.

When I stutter in front of people, sometimes they don’t understand what’s going on. Even if they don’t tell me, I can tell they think that either I’m not bright or I have some kind of “problem.” This can be frustrating because on average, one who stutters tends to have an IQ 14 points higher than average.

All that aside, I’m learning to embrace my unique way of speaking. In this day and age, social media is a necessary tool to promote oneself. If you take a peek at my tik tok and Instagram page, you will see that I actively promote my music while educating others about people who stutter.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.

A little about my music and myself… I am a trip hop and dark downtempo electronic producer. I am also a professionally trained classical and jazz singer. I fuse dark electronic music with my voice to create songs that are often described as “like a modern day phantom of the opera.” I am striving to create something totally unique, but could be compared to bands like Portishead, Moloko, Little Dragon, Phantogram and Bjork.

I got into singing because of my aforementioned stutter. One day when I was 11, I was singing in the shower. I came out of the bathroom and announced to my family that I think I can really sing. That was basically it. I auditioned for my middle school musical and got the lead role and continued to thrive in my high school music department as well, getting solos and winning awards. Additionally, I toured the world with a professional children’s choir until I was 17. We sang Mass at the Vatican once! It is a highlight of my life for sure.

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?

Being a musician is tough, but it’s even tougher when you’re in a band. Before I went solo, I was involved with a band called “DRAMA!” for 5 years. We were getting close to some success and fame, but COVID hit us hard and I was the only member of the group who decided to continue on the music path. I literally had to start over at the age of 28 and create my own music and my own following. And I freaking did it. One of my songs “Enough” got signed to the label H1 Massive last year and I’m on the hunt for an official label to represent me entirely. I have the drive. I can do this.

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?

I’m still unlearning this! I tend to “perform” when I sing when I really need to “emote”. Because of my extensive classical training, it’s really hard for me to emote the words I’m singing because I’m trying too hard to be perfect. I think in general, musicians and artists are trying to hard. It’s so tough to be chill, but I’m working on it (is that an oxymoron ? LOL )
