We recently connected with Mr. Every Day and have shared our conversation below.
Mr. Every, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Before we get into specifics, let’s talk about success more generally. What do you think it takes to be successful?
Success comes from hard work and complete dedication. You must have an insatiable appetite for success. you must be driven beyond all measure with a complete unwillingness to accept defeat and or denial. Success requires a tough skin and you must be prepared for rejection while still having the ability to come back from failure even stronger and more resilient than ever.
I’ve had so many opportunities come and go especially as an Artist from multiple record deals in the past that fell through to eventually starting my own production record label, signing a distribution deal with a division of Sony orchard to then being gifted to run that same division of Sony orchard, where I now can sign and distribute artist without a middle man or red tape.
This all came from my continued belief and faith in myself. as I continued to network, learn and get better at my craft. What it shows is that f you stay in the game long enough and network accordingly and continue to excel you will be noticed by the right people. Sometimes it just takes the right person to see what it is you do. perseverance and Timing is everything.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I was born in the music business. My Biological Father was Adenola the Drum master aka Ade pronounced (Ahh Day) and my God Father Gil Scott Heron founded Gil Scott Heron and the Midnight band in the early 70s and were the very first artist signed to entertainment Mogul Clive Davis, Arista records. My God Father GIL is considered the Godfather of Rap as one of the first artists to record poetry to music commercially. I toured with them city to city starting at the age of three. I was the famous child on the poster of their billboard that was displayed prominently outside the venues of all their shows.
My mom was a part of Simba, an African Dance ensemble and my father played the drums for them. I believe that’s where they met. I came up playing multiple percussion instruments, congas, bells, Trap drums you name it. I eventually morphed into Breakdancing and eventually MCing aka Rapping. I was an official B Boy. The last of the breed of the true MC. As I got older sports took over. I played 4 sports in High School, ultimately attending The University of Buffalo, NY to play Football which at that time was making the Jump to Division 1. I took what I thought would be a short leave of absence after my freshman year. I had established a business designing T-shirt merchandise with some of my college friends. We were discovered by multi platinum Def jam recording Artist 3rd Base and I wound up designing and selling their merch on tour, eventually finding my way back to Music, securing my first deal and becoming a professional Hip Hop Artist.
I worked at my craft 24 7. It was a part of my everyday life performing at serious venues all over NYC. I performed at the legendary Supper club, Tramps, and the Limelight just to name a few. I even opened up for my godfather at his favorite venue The Legendary S.O.B.s. I also performed out of state opening up for Gil and overseas at major Hip Hop festivals in Copenhagen Denmark. Gil taught me how to be more disciplined with my craft and as someone who didn’t really handle his business properly I learned what not to do by watching him make the mistakes he did. It’s for that reason that I began to take the business side of the industry much more seriously. I began reading all types of music business related books and I began attending lectures, seminars and workshops all over the country just to gain more first hand knowledge.
Now that I’m older and more seasoned I’m able to offer so much more to my clients as a result of all my years of experience in entertainment. I have over 15 years of experience alone just in radio, producing three shows over that span and currently producing two shows as the DJ and Host of Past Life radio WCDB 90.9 on the Fm dial. I specialize in Artist management, music, radio and film production, marketing and street promotions and social media management. I run a full scale multi media production company called Past Life Entertainment Group LLC that houses a recording studio, Prodigy Studios LLC and I also run Niche Distribution group LLC a sub division of Sony orchard. I do a lot of consulting for independent artists that need direction. Having managed platinum artists and producers has given me an edge in my understanding of what needs to be done in order to be successful.
I’m a known problem solver. Born under the sign of Virgo, we’re known for being thinkers and being very meticulous and detail oriented. I do a lot of research so I’m constantly learning more and more about the business.. I’m very adept at applying what I learn in real time. People constantly look to me as a source of information. I’m constantly solving problems for people. Especially when it comes to the steps artists need to take when beginning to establish their brand. I think what sets me apart from most people is my unwavering drive. I have an insatiable appetite for success. no matter how hard the road is or the obstacles I maneuver around them. I’m never deterred. I’m always optimistic, never pessimistic about my chances of success. As long as I have air in my lungs I will achieve against all odds. My drive is my Superpower. I outwork most people.
I think what I’m most proud of is my ability to get better with time, especially as an artist myself. I record under the name Mr. Every Day as a solo Artist and my multi genre Hip Hop alt rock band goes by the name Mr. Every Day and the Past Life. I’ve been recording for so many years it’s kind of become second nature to me and I believe I’ve actually gotten better with time not worse as most artists start to fade. I’m aging like a fine whine in the game. I feel like I’m better than I’ve ever been with my concepts, musical ear and delivery. I want everyone to know that anything you get from me will always be high quality whether it’s my music, my films or my support of your project and campaign. I will always give 110 percent effort or I won’t do it at all. I’ve forged the jewels of the past to build a new brighter future. That’s what my brand Past Life represents. Old and New coming together to form greatness!!
Have you ever had to pivot?
I had just received an internship opportunity to work for a clothing line by the name of Entrig located at the historic NYC Empire State building. I was brought into the company by a very good friend and mentor of mine Michael Gottlieb known as MJ to his friends and Legendary DJ Maseo of De La Soul. I hit the ground running bringing so much value to the company that within the first week I was promoted to Marketing Director. I was traveling the country and doing major product placement for NFL players, platinum rappers, radio DJs and Tv Stars. Just as the company was set to skyrocket, internal strife derailed the company causing a complete shutdown of operations. I was informed that the company was being dissolved and unfortunately they could not afford to pay me.
Instead of looking at is a set back and allowing it to depress me I took advantage of the ability to liquidate all of the clothing selling the merch on the streets making as much money as I could selling the remaining inventory with the CEO’s blessings. I began to travel to multiple clothing conventions marketing my skills as a fashion consultant as my reputation and name began to soar due to all of the work I put in with the company. I received many offers to do freelance marketing and promotions for various clothing brands.. I used my experience and connections as a springboard to leverage more lucrative situations within the entertainment business thus making myself more of a commodity. I turned lemons into lemonade. Bigger Hip Hop Artist took notice and brought me into their camps to charge more life into their movements. This led to me getting on a major radio station on 105.1 FM in NYC for an exclusive interview on the STAR and BUCWILD SHOW as the publicist for The Legendary Multi platinum Hip Hop Artist Black Rob and ultimately becoming his manager, taking my Name Mr. Every Day to the next level.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
Being on radio brings every type of artist, producer manager and label exec to my door. the opportunity to use my platform to promote themselves or their artist, It’s kind of a no brainer that they would flock to me. My focus is more so independent artist driven. I break new records all the time.
One of the smartest decisions I made was opening up Prodigy Studios LLC because it put me in a great position to discover new talent. A recording studio brings a constant supply of artists right to my doorstep. It’s a win win, I get paid to record them and it also allows me to evaluate their talent.
Running Niche Distribution Group, a subsidiary of Sony Orchard is the final phase as every artist eventually wants to put their music out on the DSPS. So once it’s recorded I can release their music world wide as well.
