We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jessica Green a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Jessica, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
As the name implies, my company, Demo Reels For Actors, specializes in editing demo reels—video versions of an actor’s resume, which are essential tools for actors to market themselves and secure audition invitations.
My journey to this career began as a seasoned actor who was consistently underwhelmed by the reels I paid other editors to create. These editors, while skilled in their craft, simply didn’t understand the nuances of acting. They didn’t know what was needed for actors to appropriately market themselves, and they didn’t have an eye for choosing the best moments to showcase my talent. They were missing that spark, that magic that makes a reel memorable.
Frustrated, I took matters into my own hands. I dove headfirst into the world of editing, determined to create a reel that truly represented my abilities. After countless late nights and plenty of trial and error, I finally cracked the code. My reel was everything I had hoped for, and my friends noticed.
Word spread quickly. Soon, I was editing reels for fellow actors left and right. Each reel was like a new adventure—finding those golden moments, piecing together the perfect showcase of someone’s hard work and passion.
Then came the unexpected twist. A friend asked if I could edit his short film. I was flattered but also unsure. A short film felt like a different beast altogether. But he was patient, understanding, and most importantly, on a tight budget, so I agreed to give it a try.
To my surprise, I discovered that film editing felt like second nature. It combined my love for storytelling with the thrill of solving a complex puzzle. That first film was a success, and I was hooked. I threw myself into learning everything I could about film editing, absorbing knowledge like a sponge.
Before I knew it, I was editing narrative work full-time, crafting stories frame by frame, while my company, Demo Reels For Actors, continued to flourish. Each day brings new challenges and opportunities, and I couldn’t be happier with where this journey has taken me.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I got into editing demo reels through my own frustration as an actor. After years of receiving underwhelming reels from other editors who lacked the insider perspective of what truly makes an actor’s reel stand out, I decided to take matters into my own hands.
My company creates actor reels that are powerful marketing tools, telling compelling stories that catch the eye of casting directors.
What sets me apart is my deep understanding of the acting industry. Being an actor myself, I know what makes a performance stand out. This unique perspective allows us to create reels that are not just technically proficient but also strategically curated for maximum marketability for each actor.
We approach each project with creativity and care, ensuring every reel is a true reflection of the actor’s talent and potential.
Building this business has been an incredible journey. Our success lies in our deep understanding of both the technical and artistic aspects of acting. Each reel is a collaborative effort, and we take pride in bringing out the best in every actor we work with.

What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
The primary source of new clients for me has always been referrals. While I do attract clients through social media, Google, and various marketing campaigns, referrals have consistently been the most effective and rewarding. These referrals often come from other actors who have seen my work or are already clients, as well as from coaches and managers within the industry.
Word of mouth is powerful, and there’s nothing quite like a recommendation from someone who has experienced the impact of our work firsthand.

What else should we know about how you took your side hustle and scaled it up into what it is today?
My journey into editing began with a simple frustration: I wasn’t satisfied with the demo reels I received as an actor. Determined to create a reel that truly showcased my skills, I embarked on a self-taught journey into video editing.
As friends and fellow actors saw the results of my work, they began asking me to edit their demo reels as well. This positive feedback fueled my passion and confidence in my editing abilities. Recognizing the demand, I took the leap to officially launch my actor reel business.
The early days were filled with learning curves and challenges, but each project taught me invaluable lessons. The business grew steadily through word-of-mouth referrals, laying a solid foundation for what came next: I seized the opportunity to edit a short film for the first time. This pivotal moment opened my eyes to the world of narrative editing. I immersed myself in tutorials, courses, and hands-on practice, continuously expanding my editing techniques and deepening my understanding of storytelling principles, while seeking out more filmmakers to collaborate with.
With each film and series project, I pushed myself to innovate and elevate my work, honing my ability to translate footage into captivating visual stories. This dedication and commitment to excellence paid off as my portfolio grew in diversity and quality.
Recognition soon followed, with my work earning prestigious awards at festivals worldwide—Best Film, Best Series, and Best Editor accolades among them. These achievements not only boosted my visibility but also solidified my reputation as a skilled and sought-after editor in the industry.
Today, my career seamlessly blends my role at Demo Reels For Actors with freelance film editing, encompassing a dynamic mix of creating impactful actor reels and crafting compelling narratives for films and series. I’m proud of the journey that has brought me here and remain eager for the opportunities ahead to continue pushing the boundaries of visual storytelling.
