Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Danielle Kloberdanz. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Danielle, thanks for joining us today. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
I took a risk when I published my book Inner Compass Mom, but I’m glad I did. It details the extraordinary and completely unexpected spiritual awakening that I experienced a few years ago. I was terrified that people would think I was crazy, but over time I felt encouraged by others to share my story.
Before this awakening took place, I was on a quest to find answers to some of life’s bigger questions. As a mother of four I felt overwhelmed and questioned my fitness as a mom. At the same time, I wondered if there was more in store for me, beyond my role as a stay-at-home mom and a wife.
During this life-changing awakening, I received many of the answers that I had been looking for. For five days, I remained in a fully awakened, blissful state of unconditional love, acceptance and peace. In Inner Compass Mom I share what I experienced and my new approach to life and motherhood that evolved out of that time. Besides my awakening, I also illustrate how certain mindset tools and spiritual practices can help us tune into our inner compass, guiding us through challenging times while uncovering new personal truths.
I published Inner Compass Mom in May 2021 and now coach others through private sessions, workshops, and my book club. I also published the Inner Compass Journal in 2023 to encourage others to experience the healing power of journaling.
Currently, I am working on my second book which focuses on the power of tuning into ourselves to increase our inner peace and get greater clarity on what we truly desire. The effective tools and practices that I highlight in this book seem to be needed now more than ever before in a world that has become increasingly challenging and distracting.
Danielle, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Growing up, I couldn’t have imagined moving out of my home country of The Netherlands one day, but I did at the age of 26. After completing my M.A. in Developmental Psychology at the Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam, I met my American husband and moved to California.
Despite having a formal education, I had always wanted to be a stay-at-home mom of a large family. Having achieved this dream in my late thirties, I felt grateful for the many blessings in my life, but also wondered if there was more in store for me. Parenting our four children was much more challenging and not as fulfilling as I had imagined. Fueled by disillusionment and the hope that there was another chapter waiting for me, I embarked on a series of spiritual practices and mindset tools that ultimately led to a life changing awakening, transforming my outlook on life and instilling a new understanding of motherhood.
This experience birthed the Inner Compass Living company and community, my first book Inner Compass Mom, and the Inner Compass Journal. I strongly believe in the healing power of true connections and as a result, I now lead a book club, provide workshops, and offer one-on-one life coaching.
I am currently working on my second book which is all about diving deep into powerful tools that help us navigate our chaotic and distracting world by reconnecting to our inner compass. Inner peace and personal clarity cannot come from outside of us. It is an inside job.
If you’d like to stay in the loop on the publishing of my next book, then sign up to my weekly newsletter, Wednesday Wisdom. Every Wednesday you’ll receive updates, tips, tools, book recommendations, inspiring quotes, special offers, and more.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
My business is built on the foundation of the relationships that I’ve developed in my community as well as with my clients. That’s why I believe it’s so important to connect with people at a personal level. When I’m open about my own challenges and how I manage them, it seems to encourage others as well to be more open and share their struggles. That’s when people know that you are real and that you talk from experience. That’s how I’ve built my reputation in the market, resulting in a wonderful network of support. I especially love my network of other local mompreneurs and authors. We encourage and support each other.
A reputation has everything to do with being real and reliable. When you show people the real you, they’re more likely to trust you and want to work with you. I’ve found that when I’m honest about my challenges, people are more likely to open up about theirs. That’s how I’ve been able to build amazing connections, and people seem to continue to come back to me for inspiration and support.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
I had many doubts and insecurities about writing a book. For over a year, I suppressed the desire to write and publish it. However, I’d been practicing tuning into my inner compass to see what my true self really desired, beyond my deepest fears. Over time, it became clear to me that a deeper part of me really wanted to do this. I could no longer deny it and found a way to deal with my insecurities.
Publishing Inner Compass Mom has been very rewarding in many ways, especially in terms of being able to connect to others who recognize themselves in my book. It’s truly moving when someone tells you that your book has made a difference in their lives. This is what keeps me going.
