We were lucky to catch up with Tara Watkins recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Tara thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
My family and I had recently done a cross country move, with no job lined up for me. I’d experienced 2 very different jobs prior to this move that both had their pros and cons and essentially what it came down to was – I did not like being told what to do within this field. I wanted to practice how I thought was best and in a way that took more time with people to truly help them. I decided to start my own business on that move, but was not exactly sure how I was going to do that.
After a lot of thought and the help of a good core group of friends, the decision to build a mobile chiropractic business came to life. This was something I only heard about once. It sounded different, a little scary, but very exciting. I had worked in two traditional brick and mortar prior to this move and had no experience with mobile care, but I had a portable chiropractic table, a reliable car, and a set of skills that made it all possible.

Tara, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I went to 8.5 years of schooling. My undergraduate degree is in Athletic Training prior to getting my doctorate degree in Chiropractic. I have always known I wanted to be in the medical field somehow, and I was drawn heavily to sports medicine. I started my own mobile chiropractic practice after working at two other clinics for 4 years. I still have a heavy sports medicine focus, but also treat family wellness and prenatal care.
I’m very unique in my area because I am mobile, I offer my services within people’s homes, businesses, gyms, etc. Sometimes, when the weather is nice, I set up shop in backyards or nearby parks! I am unlike a traditional chiropractor in a sense that I take my time with my clients. I used to work in fast pace, high volume clinics where spending more than 5-7 minutes with a patient was considered too long. Now, I spend a minimum of 30 minutes with people. I offer full spine and extremity chiropractic adjustments along with various soft tissue techniques. I also offer rehabilitative exercises and exercise programming for my clients who want more at home work or advanced training who either want to get back into an exercise routine or want more of a guided approach to their work outs. My business, my brand, my work focuses on helping others do exactly what they love. I value movement of all kinds and strive to keep people moving and doing their favorite things.
I’m most proud of myself – for building a business from the ground up. For conquering my fears and doubts by actually starting this business and or finding my passion and love for chiropractic because I made it my own.

What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
Network, network, network. When I started my business I had a clientele of a few close friends and that was it. I was new to the area and needed to put myself out there. I researched other practitioners/providers/like minded wellness business owners in the areas I wanted to work in and introduced myself to them. Small businesses love to work together. We came up with event ideas to help promote each other’s business and shared our network of professionals to build a collaborative system!

What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
Honestly, giving the best care I can and being the most genuine person and provider. My clientele is built from mostly referrals. I try my best to be the best chiropractor I can be and staying true to my passion and business model. That seems to resonate with my clients and helps me find like minded people to work with. In one past job, I felt I had to be scripted and do things the way the franchise wanted me to do, instead of how I felt worked the best for me and my patients. I did not feel authentic or true to myself or the people I was seeing. Once I started my own business and flipped the switch on how I was going to care for people and grow my business, things altered and I started gaining more clients that had the same philosophy and goals as me.
