Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Nithya Hari. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Nithya, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Earning a full time living from one’s creative career can be incredibly difficult. Have you been able to do so and if so, can you share some of the key parts of your journey and any important advice or lessons that might help creatives who haven’t been able to yet?
Yes, very much. It all started as a parttime job, with 3 students taking dance classes in my garage. Eventually the students strength grew and i started subleasing a place to take classes, this was few years ago. Now we have our own dance studio in Katy biggest in town about 2200 sqft. It was a long journey that led till here, slow but a steady one.

Nithya, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Hi, I am Nithya Hari, Creative Director and Choreographer of Bollywood dancing Stars, a Bollywood based Dance company hailing from the subcontinent of India, it is more of a contemporary dance form. we have about 150 to 180 students learning Bollywood Dance right from the age of 4 to about 50 years. We offer dance classes, hosts various community and private events. Our students have performed at various stages including the halftime shows at the Rockets and a huge Dance Drama at George Brown Convention center. Since we also host major community events our students get chance to perform at these and various other events. Having them perform at various events, we help them to overcome the stage fear at a very young age. We also host private events and have an inhouse emcee to conduct your events and make it memorable.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being creative, is when your vision comes to live, It is quite satisfying experience as a creator. There was this dance drama that i choreographed and executed at the George Brown convention center which was a 90 minutes dance production. That was most rewarding experience. Also when you see your students showcasing your creatives, it gives immense pleasure and keeps you wanting to do more.

Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
Yes, quite sadly they don’t think that being in the creative field is a real job. Since its not like a 9 to 5 job, non-creatives think that our job is not very important and we can chose to skip our commitments, but in reality our commitments and job is as important as theirs :)
