We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Brittney Carmichael. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Brittney below.
Brittney, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
In 2012, my mom had a massive stroke that paralyzed her. It was the first time anything had really shaken my world and caused me to question the purpose of life. After months of intense recovery she regained speech and mobility. As soon as she could speak I asked her a bold question “Why did you do this to yourself?” Without hesitation she said, “Because everybody needed something from me.” I felt that deep in my soul and quickly realized I too was falling in her footsteps. I had a future glimpse of what people pleasing could lead to. That experience sent me on an inward journey to discover who I authentically was. Upon my own journey, I began asking the clients that sat in my hair salon chair the same question I was asking myself “Who am I?” and “What am I passionate about?” At that point I had spent over 10 years making women look beautiful from behind the chair, but I knew something was missing… It didn’t matter what the women looked like on the outside if she hated the way she felt on the inside. That was this shift in perspective that began my mission to empower women to SHINE from the inside. My mission is simple: create beautiful hair and beautiful hearts. Empowering women to reclaim their confidence and embrace their wildest dreams and to remind them that anything is possible if they just believe in themselves.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
People would describe me as 99% unicorn. A mix of magic, inspiration, and a no BS straight shootin’ truth teller. I spent my childhood growing up in my mom’s hair salon. When I turned 12 and she wouldn’t make me look like Christina Aguilera I took the scissors into my own hands and that kicked started my 15 year career behind the chair at my luxury vegan salon, OMGhairstyles, in the heart of Frisco, Texas. The salon offers a balance of holistic hair care and empowerment coaching which leaves every client feeling and looking their best. When you walk out of my suite you will not be the same person you were when you came in. I’ll help you discover your hidden passions, uncover your deeper fears that hold you back from shining your authentic light, and empower you to believe in your dreams and give you a practical plan to make it happen. I’m most proud of the amount of love, connection, and healing that has happened inside those 4 walls. Holding space for someone to find their voice and finally say they love themself is the most rewarding feeling that creates a positive ripple effect. If you’re looking for a source of inspiration to plug into, a community of like hearted soul sisters, or a space to feel safe to be seen then you’ll feel right at home in OMGhairstyles salon.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
Authenticity and creating damn good hair. Becoming a master at your craft combined with being your true self makes for a potent magic that attracts your perfect ideal client. Word of mouth will always trump any form of marketing for a service based business as there is a certain “trust” factor that comes along from your besties referral. Especially when it comes to a women’s hair! Creating an amazing atmosphere that people want to escape from their life to retreat in to your uplifting environment makes for effortless service that elevates the client experience. One of the most helpful mindset shifts I made was when I started thinking about my business from the clients perspective. I walked in as if I were in her shoes to see and assess what I would like to feel while going through the service. Plus, it doesn’t hurt to show off your awesome work and space through the mighty platform of Insta. Reels are where it’s at these days for growing your audience and engagement. The moral of the story is do damn good work and they will come back every single time. Then you won’t have to worry about turnover because as a service provider we can only take so many people per day. Craft your perfect clientele and treat them right. Don’t be afraid to say no or set boundaries because you’re the boss.
Have you ever had to pivot?
2020. The end. All jokes aside, we’ve never had to shut the doors to our salon for any reason so this quickly prompted a shift in direction. As you can tell, we do things a little differently in the salon by adding a layer of empowerment coaching. With the salon closed, I instantly shifted into full time hype girl and took my coaching practice to the next level. It had been a side hustle for a few years, but I know this was the moment to step out from behind the chair and share my unique gifts with the world beyond hair. Not only have I grown my coaching practice, we now have women’s retreats, online courses, and I even created a self love affirmation deck called Shine From the Inside Oracle. I’ve taken the 15 years of listening to how women think and feel about themselves and turned it into a 6-week program of self-discovery so you can learn to love yourself in my signature program Shine School. It’s amazing what happens when things don’t go your way, but open the door for bigger opportunities if you’re willing to accept what is and say yes to what lights you up.
