We were lucky to catch up with Kelvin Chambliss recently and have shared our conversation below.
Kelvin, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
As a kid I was always watching movies, my parents had this huge rack of DVDs of different movies and TV shows and I would stay up at hour’s end just watching all types of different films. There was one that caught my attention the most and it was Transformers (1984) we had it on a cassette tape and it was my favorite movie to watch. Just the feeling that the movie gave me as a kid made me want to one day make someone feel that same feeling. Going through elementary through high school I was always surrounded by sports but in the midst of that, I gained a love for theatre. From kindergarten through 12th grade I was in theatre and would act in different class plays throughout the years. The first time I realized this was my passion was when I directed my first play and everyone in my class enjoyed it. It gave me such a feeling that I had never felt before and from then on I kept writing and trying to make the best films I could!
Kelvin, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Kelvin Chambliss, I am a Film Director and screenwriter and I am also a film production assistant! I started in the industry after being able to be a PA for Mila Vilaplana’s short film “Octopus” in late 2022. It was my first time on a film set and learning from the amazing people on that set is a memory I will always hold near my heart. Through my films, my goal is to evoke an emotion out of the audience whether it’s laughter, sadness, or being scared, my goal is to get that emotion out and that is a goal that I am still trying to craft to this day!
Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
Being an artist in any aspect can be very mentally draining, the constant debating on whether or not you’re good enough is something that I have struggled with in the past and I know others have as well. It’s a constant battle of self-perfection that can hold artists back and as I have talked with other creatives and other people who have that constant battle I have learned that you will never be “perfect” no one is. Placing that impossible tag over your head can cause you to miss out on the beautiful fact that there are people out there who enjoy your work and think you are amazing.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is being able to share personal stories through film with people all around the world. Making characters that you can either grow to hate or grow to love and build a connection with.
