We caught up with the brilliant and insightful MUXXXE a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
MUXXXE, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
Well, I believe that the one of the projects that is closest to my heart would definitely be “CHULA”, the first site-specific intervention I did back in 2018 at the border between Tijuana and the US. That was the beginning of everything, right at the start of my career, it happened as a reaction of the political climate fueled by Trump, the injustices being made to central americans trying to migrate from their home countries to the us in the quest for a better life, it was a very tense time in my hometown and i felt i needed to do-say something about it.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is MUXXXE and i’m a visual artist- rapper from Tijuana, Mexico. I started this project conceptually back in 2016 as a way to understand my identity as a queer-trans person. Music became naturally an extension of my practice, making sound a key part of what i do. Performing gender and the ideas we have built around it has been a particular interest of mine, understanding the impact they have in society and culture from a critical perspective.
In 2018 I started performing through this persona as a way to voice and cast out the trauma I’ve been carrying within, healing and learning through music, through actions, through words.
I like to think of myself as a conceptual rapper, using sound as a medium to communicate and share my experiences with others, as a tool to amplify collectively our journeys as queer identities from third world countries, always having an intention behind, from my image to my choice of words

What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
I think that one of the most valuable lessons i’ve learned these past couple of years is to stop forcing things, stop forcing your career, your relationships with others, your idea of what success is, i believe that what is meant to happen is going to happen, we just need to do our best and trust that it will lead us to the people-places that we belong to be.
Accepting reality and being present sets us free from expectations giving us the option to choose our path and start all over if necessary, life is a one time experience in just one direction that we need to live to the fullest, without guilt, frustration or regret.
I think that one of the bravest thing to do when something feels stuck is accepting that we have done our best, we just remove ourselves from places, people or even career choices when we know we said and done everything that needed to be out there, when we realize that our mission for that specific situation is complete we can continue-proceed with the next one.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
It may sound corny or even cliche but I just want to be able to provide for myself and my family, to have a solid career in the arts-music industry, to be able to work with whoever I want to and just focus on creating experiences without the worry of surviving .
I have high hopes for my career as an artist. I see a Grammy in my future. I think society is ready for someone like me to be inserted in the mainstream, someone who makes them think.
