We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Amanda Murphy a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Amanda, appreciate you joining us today. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
I learned to do art naturally as a child and then also studied Art in college as a Fine Arts major. Growing up, art was always an important part of me and still is a core part of who I am today. Knowing what I know now I wish I would have put a more daily practice into my basic drawing and painting skills since our younger age. It wasn’t until recent years that I believed in myself as an artist, that I could be a professional artist with my own art and design company, making income from something I am passionate about. For artists across all forms, I feel understanding composition, color and, patience are most essential. Think about it! Whether you are designing an interior of a new home, painting a mural on the side of a commercial building, or developing a high fashion outfit for the runway— composition, color, and patience are all vital for a successful creative project. How the elements arrange to speak to its viewer, how the color draws the eyes in and around the piece of work, and the patience it takes for the creative to bring their vision to life (not to mention the patience it takes to land the gig!) all weigh heavily on the success of many forms of art. The biggest obstacle in my way hope learning more with me and time. It takes a lot of drive, focus, and commitment to be a creator. As a neuro-divergent artist with ADHD, sticking to a creative schedule while functioning on a short attention span and a roller coaster emotional state has been my biggest obstacle. However, I know there are many successful creatives who also live with ADHD, and listening to their journeys is a saving grace to know I am not alone. One of my favorite neurodivergent artist is Andy J Pizza, and his podcast Creative Pep Talk has gotten me through a lot of rough days!
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I help individuals gain new perspectives with my out-of-the-box designs, opening their minds and hearts through my colorful creations. My artwork centers around themes of nature, mental health, and female empowerment. My art helps commercial and residential clients transform their space into an inviting, exciting, and memorable experience through both canvas art and mural paintings.
My art & design business was built on the foundations of Fine Art. When you hire me to paint a mural, you won’t just get a painted wall, but a highly professional and gorgeous work of Art. I value details, texture, and depth to create a wall that transforms a space into one of purpose, beautification, interaction, and personality.
What sets me apart from other creators is that I have the ability to adapt my artistic approach to fit the needs of my clients as my painting skills are diverse. I can create a realistic representation, or go fully abstract. However, I love to combine these opposite styles into a surreal interpretation of the message being portrayed. If you do decide to give me full creative freedom, expect a colorful, organic, and detailed work of art, most likely with a bee hidden somewhere in the piece.
My other creative services include commissioned canvas paintings, digital illustrations, live painting, and paint parties.
Feel better. Think bigger. See brighter. And stay groovy!
Can you share your view on NFTs? (Note: this is for education/entertainment purposes only, readers should not construe this as advice)
NFTs are definitely going to be a huge part of our future. After watching the incredible film, Ready Player One, and observing how technological our world is getting more and more each day, there is no doubt in my mind. I am still trying to wrap my head around it all, and I have a few digital pieces I want to post as an NFT. Before I do enter the NFT world, however, I have so much more I want to learn and understand. Still, nothing is as satisfying as the textures of paint on a canvas for me. That art form will never die in my world.
: Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My goal is to have the freedom to travel the world and do what I love ( painting murals in every country as I go!). My creative journey is also driven by my pure natural love for creating, visual problem solving, and expressing myself through using my hands to create what I can’t seem to put into words. I was born an artist, and I’ll continue to have a natural drive to pursue my creative journey!
