We were lucky to catch up with Shea Peters recently and have shared our conversation below.
Shea, appreciate you joining us today. Are you able to earn a full-time living from your creative work? If so, can you walk us through your journey and how you made it happen?
I never imagined I could build a career from home baking, but somehow I made it happen. After years in various bakeries, I decided to stop working for others and believe in myself. At eight months pregnant, I left my job to bake from home, wanting to both care for my new baby and earn an income. Starting with a small group of clients, I baked for friends, family, and neighbors, who appreciated what I offered. Establishing a presence on Yelp, Facebook, and Instagram, I shared photos of my creations and gradually gained more customers. It’s been a journey of growth and learning; every mistake has shaped me into the baker I am today.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
If we haven’t connected before, my name is Shea, and I’m a pastry chef based in Santa Clarita, California. My specialty lies in crafting buttercream and fondant cakes, alongside a variety of treats like cupcakes, cake pops, and decorated cookies. From a young age, my passion for baking and all things sweet was evident. When an opportunity arose in the bakery department of my local grocery store, I knew it was the perfect fit. It was there that I discovered not only my love for baking but also my talent for cake decorating. This realization led me to pursue a formal culinary education, earning a degree in patisserie and baking.
Following graduation, I gained valuable experience working in several bakeries, where my passion for creating and decorating cakes flourished. What I truly cherish about my work is crafting edible art for my clients’ special occasions. The most rewarding part of my job is receiving feedback and witnessing the joy my treats bring to people. Knowing that I can contribute a little happiness to the world through my creations is incredibly fulfilling. I take immense pride in the quality of my products, and it means everything when customers are happy with their purchases.
One aspect that sets me apart in this industry is my commitment to ensuring client satisfaction from start to finish. Prior to pickups or deliveries, I always send a photo of the final product to ensure it meets their expectations. I also follow up after events to ensure everything went smoothly. This attention to detail helps me avoid any potential issues and ensures happy customers.
I am particularly proud to have built a thriving business with numerous five-star reviews and a loyal client base that feels like family.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
For me the most rewarding part about being an artist is the ability to take someone’s vision, ideas, likes or interests and turn it into an edible masterpiece. The best part is, not only are my cakes beautiful, but they are delicious as well.

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My driving goal is to continually strive to become the best version of myself. I am constantly seeking out new tips and techniques to enhance my skills as an artist, not just for my own satisfaction but also for the benefit of my family and customers. By being the best version of myself, I can bring my utmost creativity and passion to my work, resulting in exceptional creations for my clients. Ultimately, I want to be able to inspire others and help them take their passions and turn them into something great.
