We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jamie Getty a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Jamie, thanks for joining us today. Looking back at the decisions you made early in your career, particularly whether to join a firm or start your own, do you feel you made the right choice for that stage of your career?
When I began practicing law, I joined a small law firm as an associate attorney. I wanted to learn how to practice in the area of family law. After 2 years, I joined a larger law firm to learn so that I could learn and be mentored by a senior partner, who was a well regarding family law specialist. I recently joined Brandon Pettijohn to form our own law firm, Pettijohn & Getty, LLP.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
While in law school, we read countless court opinions, which I found to be extremely dry. The family law cases were interesting and held my attention. My criminal law professor described the practice of family law as “helping good people at their worst”. Clients rely on my expertise and counsel during one of the most traumatic and emotional times a person will ever experience. I help my clients navigate their legal issues with compassion and empathy. I am a zelous advocate for my clients. I know that I did a great job when the opposing party refers clients to me.
Can you tell us the story behind how you met your business partner?
I met my partner, Brandon Pettjohn, a few years ago when he was opposing counsel in a domestic case. I researched Brandon online to find out more about his background and family law experience. I was very impressed by Brandon’s online presence and creative use of social media on YouTube, FaceBook and Instagram. In 2020, he began using Tik Tok to make videos on legal topics, when it was still just a dance app. During our initial phone call, most of my questions for Brandon were about marketing and social media. Most people these days research legal matters online and turn to social media for information before they ever call a lawyer to schedule an initial consultation. Older lawyers are adverse to using social media, but it is the most effective way to reach out to the clients who need our services.
Any thoughts, advice, or strategies you can share for fostering brand loyalty?
I always try to keep in mind how traumatic it is for my clients when they experience the loss of family. Except for adoption cases, clients are generally not happy when they have to talk to me. I treat everyone as if they are my most important client. If a client is unhappy with me for any reason, I make it right. The majority of new clients come from referrals by previous clients.
