We recently connected with Averi Burk and have shared our conversation below.
Averi, appreciate you joining us today. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
I learned to do what I do by being thrown on stage, lessons, practice and being obsessed with it! My dad was the first person to teach me guitar and from then on I’ve done lessons on and off and hundreds of cover gigs. Being thrown into the cover gig scene has taught me so much about performance and truly captivating an audience.
To speed up the learning process I definitely could’ve stuck with lessons and been more proactive about practicing. Growing up I dealt with overwhelm and anxiety often and I believe that made it harder for me to practice like I could’ve. Knowing what I know now I would’ve been way more disciplined.
Self awareness, being self motivated, and staying consistent are all super essential skills to have. Music sets my heart on fire, but getting better at it takes real work that may not always be “fun” and that’s where all of those skills come into play. Also having people who help keep you motivated and inspire you to do more makes a world of difference and I am so grateful for everyone who has helped me along the way!

Averi, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Averi Burk and I’m a performer, musician, singer and songwriter. I started playing guitar at 7 years old and have been doing so ever since. I started as a worship leader and made my way to the cover scene all while honing in on my craft and creating original music. While I fall under the alternative rock pop genre I like to blend a lot of different styles together. I’m influenced by Joan Jett, Tash Sultana, Kid Cudi, Banks, Labrinth, H.E.R, and many more.
I make music to stimulate healing. As someone who has struggled with anxiety and depression I found peace and healing through music, and I want to be able to provide that for others. While I have some fun songs I primarily prefer to write about my personal experiences in hopes to let others know they’re not alone. Music is my heart and I want to be able to show so much love through it.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
I touched on this in a previous question but people drive my creative journey. I truly want my shows to be a safe place for people to let out their emotions, have fun, feel loved and ultimately feel connected to themselves and others. I want to write songs that remind people that they are loved and not alone. The world is so dark and I want to be able to shine a light while doing what I love.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding part of being an artist is performing songs I’ve written live and seeing people having fun/singing along. The live performance aspect of being an artist is my favorite and to see people truly listening and experiencing my songs is absolutely incredible.
