We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful NINO YUNIARDI. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with NINO below.
Alright, NINO thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
I first got into art as a way to release my anxiety and disappointment. It became a personal therapy session for me, helping me understand my feelings and control my reactions to negative circumstances, especially during my teenage years.
Following my curiosity, I eventually went to art school because I loved creating art. There, I continued learning about the craft, exploring different techniques and methods.
I focused on graphic and packaging design as my career path, but making art has always been a constant in my life. I continue to learn and create art out of personal necessity, like the air I breathe.
The most important thing I’ve discovered is that making art helps me find myself. It redefines who I am, helping me understand what I truly like and dislike. Creating authentic work allows me to be honest with myself and continually rediscover who I am as both a human and an artist.
NINO, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My journey into the world of art began as a means to express and understand myself and the world around me. From a young age, I felt a deep connection to the act of creation, finding solace and clarity in the process of making art. This passion led me to design school, where I immersed myself in the study of design and art-making. During my time there, I honed my skills as a designer, creating digital products and designs that merged functionality with aesthetics.
As I progressed in my design career, I felt an ever-growing pull towards developing my art practice. My curiosity and passion for art-making deepened, leading me to regularly practice and refine my craft. This journey was not just about perfecting techniques, but also about discovering my authentic voice and asking the profound question of why I create the art I do. Through this introspective process, I realized that my joy of creating was something I wanted to share with others – both my collectors and my students.
For my collectors, I aim to infuse their spaces with joy through my artwork, creating pieces that resonate with them on a personal level and bring a sense of happiness and inspiration into their homes. For my students, I strive to help them discover the joy of creating art themselves. Through my workshops, I guide them in finding or rediscovering who they truly are through the process of making art.
My art focuses on embracing our differences. Growing up, I often felt different and struggled to find a sense of belonging. I turned to art as a way to heal from those childhood experiences, transforming them into positive and meaningful expressions. This theme of embracing differences is a cornerstone of my work. I use food ingredients in my titles as a playful and lighthearted way to engage in conversation with myself and my viewers, reminding us all to embrace our uniqueness.
Although it can feel awkward and strange at times, we are all human, sharing fundamental needs – the need to belong, to be heard, and to be seen. Each piece I create is an original, unique, one-of-a-kind artwork, reflecting the individuality of the human experience.
In addition to my individual work, I founded the Spice Art Club, a mentorship and community-based club. This club is dedicated to fostering a thriving art community where members support each other’s growth. It’s a space where artists can come together to share their journeys, learn from one another, and celebrate their collective and individual achievements.
In summary, my art practice is deeply rooted in self-expression, healing, and the celebration of diversity. I am passionate about creating art that brings joy and connection to others, and I am committed to helping my students and fellow artists find their own voices and paths through the transformative power of art.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist and a creator is the ability to use my practice to heal my own wounds while sharing these personal expressions with others. Through my art, I channel positive energy that others can feel and connect with. It’s a deeply personal journey that simultaneously resonates on a universal level. This connection between the personal and the universal is truly magical.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
I build my audience on social media by consistently posting with the intention of giving. I always ask myself, “Why do they care? What’s in it for them?” I view each social media post as a gift. Sometimes it’s sharing the process of how I create my art, sometimes it’s showcasing a piece for sale, and other times it’s offering a behind-the-scenes look at my work. Overall, it’s about bringing my audience closer to my practice as a whole.
I strive to make my posts as genuine and unforced as possible, integrating them seamlessly into my workflow. I am an artist first and a content creator second. My posts are an extension of my art-making practice, a way to share and learn about what I create so I can continue refining my work. This cycle of goodness and positive energy not only enriches my creative process but also fosters a deeper connection with my audience.
