We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Samantha Callahan. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Samantha below.
Samantha, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
The first time I knew I wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path was kind of this huge moment of realization. I was 15 I think, and I had just gotten a bass guitar for Christmas. As soon as I learned my first full song on bass I knew I wanted to do something with music. I had always had passion for other things, whether that be sports, or art and science, but I never stuck to them. Music on the other hand came out of nowhere and I just fell in love with everything about it, I had never felt that way about anything else in my life!
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Sam Callahan I am a Los Angeles based bassist originally from New York. I got into bass when I was 15 because I saw my favorite band: Panic! At The disco live and I thought their bass player was super cool and I looked at them on stage together and was like that’s what I want to do. I ended taking lessons with said bass player: Nicole Row in 2020 and going to Musicians Institute in 2021 and i’ve been playing music ever since. I work at a music school where I get to play bass for performance classes, concerts etc. Most of the time I’m gigging/ traveling for gigs, I also teach private lessons on the side. Most people my age in music aren’t doing music full time, they normally have a regular 9-5 job in a restaurant or a store or something along those lines, but I play music all day everyday. I’m also in several different projects all with different genres of music, I play in pop, metal, rock, country, and indie groups. I play it all, and I wouldn’t trade it for the world, because I get to experience so many different groups of people and lifestyles.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is probably the friends you make from it. I’ve met so many amazing people through all my gigs that are a vey important part of my life and have brought out the best of me. I also think the crowd responses is a huge reward, listening to them enjoy the music and sing along to the songs that I’ve helped create and bring to life. Especially playing live watching them dance and laugh or cry, it means the world to me.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
Well, my goal is to tour the world and just continue to do music full time. I’ve already started touring a bit in the US, but I’d love to go everywhere in the US and everywhere else in the world. I’m pushing to get to that point everyday, and I will continue to until I do
