We were lucky to catch up with Turic Baptiste recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Turic , thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear about the things you feel your parents did right and how those things have impacted your career and life.
Our childhood growth and development significantly shape our behaviors and ways of thinking as adults. While it’s easy to dwell on what our parents did wrong, it’s equally important to recognize the positive lessons they imparted, which often go unnoticed until later in life.
One poignant example from my childhood involves my mother’s lesson on the importance of timeliness and communication. She instilled this value through a memorable experience related to my weekly allowance. My siblings and I received a small allowance based on our adherence to household rules, primarily around being timely and communicating our whereabouts. I usually saved this money for a big purchase at the end of the month, such as a coveted pair of sneakers.
One week, I decided to hang out with friends after school without informing my mother. Although I didn’t break curfew, my absence for over three hours without any communication worried her. When I returned home, my mother calmly informed me that I would lose my allowance for the next two weeks. At the time, I felt it was harsh, but as I grew older, I realized the profound lesson in that incident. It taught me the value of communication and how a lack thereof could disrupt plans and impede progress. This lesson has been invaluable in my personal and professional life, where clear and consistent communication is key to achieving goals and maintaining relationships.
My father, on the other hand, instilled in me the importance of grooming and presenting oneself well. Before he became ill during my teenage years, he would often emphasize, “When you’re clean and look good, you feel good, and when you feel good, you are good.” This mantra taught me the significance of self value and self worth. Presenting oneself well is not merely about appearances, it’s a reflection of self-respect and confidence. This lesson has profoundly impacted my career, as I have always strived to put my best foot forward in every professional setting, understanding that how I present myself can influence my opportunities and interactions.
In essence, the lessons my parents taught me about communication, timeliness, and self-presentation have been cornerstones in my journey. These values have guided me through various challenges and successes, shaping me into the person I am today. Their wisdom has had a lasting impact, illustrating that the right guidance in childhood can foster resilience and growth in adulthood.

Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
As a creative, I’ve found that a 9-5 job can be your greatest ally. In today’s culture, there often seems to be an unspoken battle between entrepreneurs and those working traditional jobs. If your business or creative endeavors are not yet generating the revenue you need and you have the extra time, there’s no shame in working a 9-5.
I believe there’s a stigma among creatives that taking a 9-5 job signifies some form of defeat. However, my experience has taught me otherwise. I initially viewed a traditional job as a setback, but I soon realized its benefits. My 9-5 job became a critical source of funding for my creative projects until I reached a point where I no longer needed the job. This journey required discipline and resilience, qualities that have been essential to my success.
Some people may have an easier path, and we celebrate their success, but my journey involved a lot of hard work and perseverance. I had to work through many challenges to achieve my goals, and I deeply appreciate the grind it took to get here. Embracing a 9-5 while pursuing creative dreams is not a sign of defeat but a strategic move that can provide stability and resources, allowing your creativity to flourish.
Understanding this balance can be difficult for non-creatives, who might see the creative life as a constant flow of inspiration and success. The reality involves a lot of hard work, strategic planning, and sometimes, taking on a traditional job to support your dreams. This journey has taught me the value of hard work and the importance of using all available resources to achieve my goals.
So, for any creative out there who feels that working a 9-5 is a step backward, I encourage you to reconsider. It can be a stepping stone to greater things, providing the means to support and eventually fully transition to your creative career.

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
I like to refer to moments of unlearning as “deprogramming” because it involves our mind and emotions realizing that certain ideologies no longer serve our growth. A significant layer of my childhood development involved experiencing violence and witnessing violent acts committed against a parent. One of the many effects of these experiences was a profound lack of trust.
I had to reprogram myself from the need to control others’ behaviors or perceptions of me. This need for control was rooted in a fear of hurt and disappointment. I believed that if I could control others’ actions, I could prevent them from being unpredictable or from disappointing and hurting me. Letting go of this need for control was a critical step in my personal growth.
Another crucial lesson I had to unlearn was the idea that speaking well of myself was arrogant. Due to verbal and demeaning abuse during my childhood, I developed an extremely insecure and self-critical nature. I believed that praising myself automatically meant I was putting others down. This belief stunted my growth and suppressed my positive self-awareness.
Once I realized this, I took back my power by focusing on a confident and honest approach to self-expression. I learned that recognizing and speaking positively about my strengths does not diminish others. Embracing this new mindset has allowed me to grow in self-awareness and self-worth, ultimately leading to a more authentic and empowered life.
Unlearning these deeply ingrained patterns was challenging, but it was essential for my emotional and personal development. Through this process, I have become more resilient and self-assured, enabling me to navigate life with greater confidence and integrity.
