We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jessi Holden. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jessi below.
Jessi, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear the backstory of how you established your own practice.
It was thrilling starting my own business. I definitely had rose colored glasses on at first but ultimately realized how much I enjoyed working for myself and forging my own creative path. This path has lead me in a lot of directions and some of the challenges that have come up include imposter syndrome, resources/time, inconsistent income and lack of clarity. I found the perfect team to support me (a free group of fellow dietitians who support each other on a monthly call) in entrepreneurship and that has helped me overcome MANY of my challenges. Any lack of confidence I try to shake away (literally) because I know it’s just a little fear talking. My advice is to be fearless, be smart, and have a VERY clear vision of where you want to go. Lastly, be flexible as your clear vision shifts, grows, and changes.
Jessi, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m a culinary registered dietitian and mama of two amazing and hungry children. I love translating health benefits into delicious meals and creating excitement around cooking food and meal planning for families while boosting confidence in the kitchen for everyone. I’ve taught over 1000 individual and group cooking classes.
Why Family Culinary Nutrition?
Food and meal planning is so overwhelming, constantly changing and the pressure to cook from scratch is way too high…my goal is to simplify the process and make it enjoyable for everyone, no matter their cooking experience. I love helping people get out of a cooking rut, find a consistent and easy to follow meal plan that allows for variety, excitement, basic, and new recipes that are budget friendly and nutritious.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
I created an online course because I thought it was all the rage. It was, but at the same time I didn’t have an established audience to sell to yet! It flopped and while the material is still something I can use in the future, it doesn’t serve a purpose in my business now. Wasting time is a tough pill to swallow so make sure you go through the right steps first. Or at the very least, when you make a flop just own it and move on.
Other than training/knowledge, what do you think is most helpful for succeeding in your field?
I think what would help someone be successful in this field would be to better your skills at connecting with people. Don’t be culturally ignorant, step back when you need to step back, and lift voices that deserve to be lifted.
