Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jenny Quartano. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Jenny thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Was there a moment in your career that meaningfully altered your trajectory? If so, we’d love to hear the backstory.
My career has always been a passion and focus of my adult life. But the pivotal moment for me came in a very personal experience. I was just shy of 30 and had a high stress job managing a team of about 40 therapists working in trauma rehabilitation. I found myself working long hours, including weekends, giving up personal time and workouts even though that had always been important to me, and eating convenience foods far more than usual. I was exhausted, stressed, not sleeping, and gaining weight. My doctor’s recommendations included birth control, antidepressants, and sleeping pills. Instead, I opted into a competition at my gym requiring a focused effort on not just workouts but healthy eating, meditation, 8 hours of sleep, and daily mobility. My goal was really to put more emphasis on my health for a few weeks, but I gained so much more. In 8 weeks, I had eliminated all of my symptoms and felt like the 29 year old I should again! In addition, I was hitting new PRs in the gym and recovering quicker. I always knew those factors were important for my patients as well, but I had never truly integrated a holistic approach to healing in the way I had now personally experienced. I carried that value and importance forward, seeking out a functional medicine training program to incorporate a more holistic approach that has grown my outcomes for my own clients in a massive way.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
From a young age, I knew I wanted to be in a field that provided help for people in need. I waivered in college between several health professions, knowing I wanted to impact clients in a big way. I settled in physical therapy and loved the connections I was able to make with clients and families that led to a deeper understanding of their needs. As I continued to hear those issues paralleled with my own health journey, I knew I had a mission to step out of my siloed approach to care and into a more holistic place. I came to appreciate that mental and emotional health were so intertwined with physical health, and that there were so many factors in our control that could impact health in a massive way.
I began to see that every family I was working with really truly needed a village. In today’s modern age where we have more information available to us than ever before and live farther from families and are busier than ever, its can be confusing and overwhelming to sort through the available information and know what is the right decision for us. It’s a challenge to find the resources to support our own personal beliefs and values. I curated a business to meet this need–to provide expert care for women and children to optimize health and support vitality and and for generations to come.
It became my new mission for everyone I served. Today, I have a thriving practice with multiple clinicians on my team aimed at holistic support for the entire family. As a mom myself now, I’m grateful for those lessons I learned early on paired with my advanced education and knowledge of the human body. I get to help other families understand each day that food is medicine, and our genes are only a portion of the story–how we choose to live makes up the rest. I’m on mission to eliminate chronic disease and optimize health, one family at a time.

Putting training and knowledge aside, what else do you think really matters in terms of succeeding in your field?
As I’ve continued to strive for new professional goals, each step of the way I’ve found that there was one thing that has consistently helped me get to the next level. I may have had all the required knowledge, but if I didn’t have the right coach or mentor to help me achieve the next level, I would at the very least have floundered much longer to get there. Hiring a coach based on the next step I need to achieve has helped me create a clear vision and direct path to get there in a much shorter period of time. I carry this philosophy over to my clients as well. Could they get there on their own through a whole lot of trial and error? Possibly. Could they get there much quicker with a knowledgeable guide saving them time, energy, and resources? Definitely. For me, it’s a no-brainer.

Do you have any insights you can share related to maintaining high team morale?
Managing people is an art. There are 2 key components that I have found important to leading a successful and highly motivated team. The first is to create a clear vision of where we are going. People want to know what they’re doing things for. If you make widgets, you need to know just how important that cog you’re making is for the final product. The same is true for humans in a service-based industry. The team needs to know what the end goal is and why their role is important to that. I find keeping that at the forefront provides team members a value as well as a clear direction of how to proceed when faced with a new or ambiguous situation. We review at every staff meeting and use this to guide or decisions at all levels. The second is to truly understand each team member as an individual. While the vision is the same, every individual may be driven by slightly different values. Some need data and boundaries. Others need permission and creativity. Each team member has a different value they bring to the team, and tapping into their individual strengths to achieve the goal makes the whole company more successful. We celebrate those strengths as well in our staff meetings with shout outs and create personalized goals and plans for each person based on what drives them. When team members feel valued, they perform their best, and this is clearly reflected in the service they provide and the outcomes for our clients as well.
