We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Benjamin Villers. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Benjamin below.
Alright, Benjamin thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What do you think matters most in terms of achieving success?
I can only speak on what has made me successful. Saying yes to all the opportunities given to me until I had enough leverage to turn them down and decide what I want to do. Before I found success I looked and tried to take advantage of all the opportunities given to me. I never felt I was in a position to say no so I always said yes. I worked everyday, for hours, weeks & months straight until I was able to take time off. Many people try to pick and choose their opportunities, but I think this just delays success. Overtime you dont always say yes, as it will veer you off course of your main mission, but before you get to your purpose you have to hustle your way into golden opportunities.
Benjamin, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I got into the personal training business by following my passion. I had always been an athlete, but I did not know I wanted to be a personal trainer until much later in my life. It really was a bit of luck because all of the corporate jobs I applied for and interviewed for turned me down. I was trying to get these jobs not because it was what I wanted to do but because I thought I had to do it. To meet the societal norms. If it wasn’t for that constant rejection I would never have taken initiative to starting my own business and forging my own path.
In regard to DJ’ing & becoming an MC that was something I also was not expecting. I stumbled upon this by what I said earlier, saying yes to all opportunities that come my way. I was working a job, long hours and I met someone who owned a DJ company. From that day he took me under his wing and taught me so much. Since then I no longer work for them, since I do my own operation but if it wasn’t for me saying yes to every and all opportunities I would not have become a DJ & MC.
As a personal trainer I have a wide array of skills because of my experience. I have the ability to help all kinds of peoples and goals. I can help pain. This is something that people contact me for all the time back pain knee pain any type of pain. I’ve gone very good at solving the problem for I help people with losing weight building muscle improving athletic performance. These are all things that I’m good at. I have the ability to work with clients anywhere. I have my own app and my own online training business so I train my clients in a gym and online. I also have a free personal training program which is public to everybody and this is a resource to help people and, keep exercising with no excuses. It’s free and you don’t need any equipment for it. This training program has been a great resource for me in acquiring new clients getting greater engagement and helping build my brand. I developed this during the pandemic when we weren’t able to see people in person and I’ve been doing it ever since. I’m most proud about my perseverance being able to get through all these times and still be in business. I take pride and solving peoples problems executing on my word being consistent reliable dependable building a reputation on working hard. I’m very proud of this.
As a DJ & MC I take pride in my execution, consistency & reliability. I always make sure whatever event I am hired for, runs smoothly. I always bring the energy and the people around me feel it. As a DJ and MC I want to continue to expand my skills and being a master mixer and performer while I am good right now this is something that I’ve developed later in my life right now my expertise is on execution being reliable dependable and while I am always great at bringing the energy and having a great time as a DJ, I still have room to improve. I have great public speaking skills. This is been something as help me and my MC I like to be on the microphone with the attention directing the traffic directing the whatever it takes to control the crowd.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
It’s hard to describe one particular moment to demonstrate my resiliency but overall I just had to keep pushing I just never quit. There’s been many times where I almost quit. There were many times where I left California or I thought I had nothing else, but I just kept pushing no matter how down I was how stressed I was or how broke I was I just kept going for me. I felt like I had nothing else so I just kept going there had been times were I didn’t know how I was gonna pay rent or pay my bills and sometimes I had to resort to extreme measures. I’ve had to be incredibly savvy in some situations to overcome not having money, in the beginning of my journey, I had no money. I had to rack up tons of credit card debt in order to survive and learn the skills that I need to keep going over the years I was able to get rid of that credit card debt and be more debt-free. I’m still overcoming debt to this day, but I’m almost out of it but creating this debt is what helped me keep going. If it wasn’t for me pushing the limits of the system I don’t think I would be able to overcome the odds.
Can you talk to us about how your funded your business?
Before I became a full-time trainer and DJ I had to work multiple jobs so yeah what I did was I worked multiple jobs and I just wouldn’t advertise this to people so in the front of everyone I was a personal trainer and a DJ but in the back and I was still doing side jobs and racking up credit card debt, I’m not proud of the credit card debt I accumulated, but this is what I had to do in order to survive so to fund my business to get to where it is today I had to work multiple jobs besides personal training and DJ and I had to rack up that but at this point I no longer have debt and I no longer have to work multiple jobs because now I’ve been able to build up the clientele base and the reputation whe now I’m consistent with my work. You have to make sacrifices to build your business, but I was able to go full-time as a trainer when I had the ability to get clients and when you feel like you’re able to get business is when you stop working your jobs because then you need to focus on just converting your leads.
