We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Terrance Smith. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Terrance below.
Alright, Terrance thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
I have been an actor since I was eight years old in theater. I got my start at The Springer Opera House here in Columbus, Georgia. I went to college at Columbus State University, CSU, and I majored in Marketing and minored in Theater Arts. My parents wouldn’t let me do Theater as my major. I got my first theater job at Family Theatre also in Columbus, GA as the Marketing/Media Manager. About seven years ago, I decided to try film acting to see what it was like outside of theater. The first time I was on set, I was blown away by everything that happened behind the camera. It sparked a new passion in me to learn about directing and producing. I started asking questions, doing research, and eventually, I decided to go for it. In the middle of the pandemic in 2020, I made my first film with some friends called “Horsehead Theatre,” which you can find on YouTube. It was my first time directing and writing anything, and I couldn’t have done it without the amazing support from the people around me. Their help and encouragement have been invaluable, and I’m truly grateful to them for helping me get to where I am now.
Terrance, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
From an early age I always enjoyed performing. My very first play was a church at 8 years old about the true meaning of Christmas. From there my interests grew, and I wanted to be an actor. Some years later, I had the privilege of being on set, and I fell in love with the chaos. I started to ask questions and seek out mentors. I produced my first film “Horsehead Theatre”, and I am so proud.
As a filmmaker and the Owner of New World Films, I aim to create compelling and thought-provoking stories that resonate with audiences. My work spans various genres, but I always strive to infuse authenticity and emotional depth into my projects. My vision of film direction, production, and scriptwriting, bringing a unique perspective shaped by my theater background and marketing expertise.
What sets me apart is my holistic understanding of both the creative and practical aspects of filmmaking. My background in marketing helps me approach projects with a strategic mindset, ensuring that the stories I tell not only captivate audiences but also reach them effectively. I pride myself on my ability to blend artistic vision with practical execution, creating films that are both beautiful and impactful.
What I’m most proud of is the journey itself starting from a young theater enthusiast to becoming a filmmaker who can tell stories through a different medium. The support and encouragement I’ve received along the way have been instrumental in my growth, and I’m committed to paying it forward by creating opportunities for others in the industry.
For potential fans, I want you to know that my work is driven by passion, creativity, and a genuine love for storytelling. I believe in the power of film to inspire, provoke thought, and bring people together. My brand is all about authenticity, collaboration, and pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in filmmaking.
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
Ok! So, I had to give a short talk on this and I have my notes from that talk. I’m too excited about this question. So, supporting artists, creatives, and fostering a thriving creative ecosystem requires a multifaceted approach. Here are several key steps society can take to achieve this:
Funding and Grants. Increase Public and Private Funding: Governments, corporations, and philanthropists can provide grants and financial support specifically for the arts. This funding can help artists cover the costs of creating new work, renting studio space, and marketing their projects. Ensure that grant programs are accessible to a wide range of artists, including emerging artists and those from underrepresented communities.
Education and Training. Arts Education: Integrate art education programs into school curriculums to nurture creativity from a young age. Support arts-focused schools and higher education programs. Provide workshops, training programs, and mentorship opportunities for artists to develop their skills and learn about the business side of the arts.
Infrastructure and Spaces. Affordable Creative Spaces: Create and maintain affordable studio spaces, theaters, galleries, and community centers where artists can work, collaborate, and showcase their art.
Public Art Initiatives: Invest in public art projects that bring creativity into everyday spaces, making art more accessible and integrated into the community.
Community and Networking. Build Networks and Communities: Facilitate networks and communities where artists can connect, collaborate, and support each other. This can include online platforms, local artist groups, and events. Support and promote art festivals, exhibitions, and performances that give artists a platform to showcase their work and reach wider audiences.
Economic Policies and Support
Tax Incentives: Implement tax incentives and credits for individuals and businesses that invest in the arts or make significant contributions to arts organizations. Consider policies like universal basic income or targeted financial support for artists to provide financial stability and enable them to focus on their creative work.
Promotion and Visibility. Media Coverage: Encourage media outlets to cover arts and culture, highlighting the work of local and emerging artists. Support digital platforms that allow artists to showcase and sell their work, reaching global audiences.
Cultural Value and Advocacy. Cultural Appreciation: Promote the value of the arts in society, emphasizing its role in fostering empathy, innovation, and cultural identity.
Arts Advocacy: Advocate for policies and initiatives that support the arts at local, national, and international levels. Engage with policymakers to highlight the importance of a vibrant arts ecosystem.
Collaboration with Other Sectors. Cross-Sector Partnerships: Encourage partnerships between the arts and other sectors such as technology, education, and healthcare to create innovative projects and solutions. Motivate businesses to sponsor arts projects and integrate art into their corporate social responsibility programs. By taking these steps, society can create an environment where artists and creatives can thrive, contributing to a vibrant and dynamic cultural landscape. Supporting the arts not only enriches our communities but also drives economic growth, innovation, and social cohesion.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
For me, the most rewarding aspect of being an artist and creative is the ability to tell stories that resonate with people on a deep, emotional level. Creating art allows me to connect with audiences in a profound way, evoking emotions, sparking thoughts, and inspiring conversations. When someone tells me that my work moved them or made them see something in a new light, it’s incredibly gratifying. The process of creating art helps me grow as an individual. It challenges me to think critically, push my boundaries, and continuously improve my skills. I love the process of crafting stories whether through film, theater, or any other medium. Storytelling is a way to share unique perspectives, highlight important issues, and celebrate the human experience. Through my work, I can leave a lasting impact and contribute to the cultural and artistic heritage. It’s rewarding to think that my creations might inspire future generations of artists. I love collaborating with other artists, actors, and creatives is a highly rewarding aspect of my work. The exchange of ideas, the collective effort, and the shared passion for creating something meaningful enrich my own creative process. Being a part of a community of like minded individuals who support and inspire each other is incredibly fulfilling. It fosters a sense of belonging and mutual respect. There’s a unique joy in the act of creation seeing an idea come to life, from conception to final product, is incredibly satisfying. Each completed project is a testament to hard work, creativity, and perseverance.
