We recently connected with Kim Brown and have shared our conversation below.
Kim, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
Everyone that knows me knows that I lost my mother and grandmother to cancer. However, specifically, my mother. I lost my mother to breast cancer when I was 17. When she started to lose her hair to chemotherapy, I watched her cry so hard. At that moment, I I knew I wanted to be a hairstylist. When a woman gets her hair done, her confidence is through the roof. It makes them feel so good. That’s what I wanted for my mother and all of my clients that come and sit in my chair!

Kim, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I started doing hair as a teenager once again just watching my mom battle hair loss from cancer. It’s so crazy because hair was a passion for me, but I did have a plan A that didn’t work out. I decided to then go to Paul Mitchell and get my cosmetologist license to see through to my plan B. At that moment, Stylez By KayBee was born. After I graduated hair school, I immediately started to build my clientele. Honestly, I started out doing hair in my living room until I found a salon to work at. I worked at that salon for about 2 years doing business under a business. God seen bigger and better things for me and he made me really uncomfortable at that salon. I decided to step out on faith, and get my own salon suite at the St. John’s Town Center, located in Jacksonville, Fl. I was floored at how much clientele tripled within months. I knew then, I had did the right thing. I provided almost all services to my clients such as, hair extensions, natural hair care services, hair coloring, some braids services, silkpress, and etc. I feel as if my customer service skills along with my talents in doing my clients hair sets me apart from other stylist. I have a relationship with all of my clients all while, still keeping it professional with them at the same time. I go beyond all measures to make sure that my clients is happy. I am most proud of myself just believing that God has not been wrong about his vision and plan that he had for me. As long as God has my back, I know that I will be ok!

How did you build your audience on social media?
Last year in 2023, I did a soft launch on my non profit organization called The Sandy Kate Foundation- A Wig For A Cause. Just to give a little background story, I lost my mother and grandmother to cancer. I wanted to do something to honor them and just also give back to the community because God has been so good to me. Mother’s Day is a very hard day for me, so I decided to do a full mommy makeover for a client that has cancer. I hired a makeup artist as well a personal stylist. I made a wig for her that she can put on and take off easily. Whatever will make her life less complicated than it already is dealing with cancer. I also hired a photographer to do a really nice reel on social media. Let me just say, my candidate was so happy and surprised that day. It was beautiful. Once I got the video out, I decided to post it on social media as a soft launch because my organization still has work to be done to it before it becomes a non profit. When I posted that video, I probably had around 540 followers at most. I had gotten so many engagements, shares, and likes from so many people. It was crazy. The same day I posted it, I watched my followers go crazy. Now, I have 15k followers just from that video alone. I’m saying this to say, keep posting because you never know what will go viral!

Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
This is a great question! Honestly, every time a new client sit in my chair, I always ask them how did they hear about me? To answer this question, I would have to say Google and word of mouth. Social media might come in at number 3 for me surprisingly. Majority of the time, people would just google hair salons around them and they always say mine be one of the first one to come up. I learned that your five star ratings put you at the top of the search engine. Then after that, comes word of mouth. If you do a great job on someone’s hair, they are your walking model everywhere they go. People are going to ask, “who did your hair?” I feel like that’s why it’s important to make sure your clients hair looks great because they are a representation of your brand!
