Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Zhuoqian Yu. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Zhuoqian, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
I once worked as a director, producer, and production designer to create a short film called BODY about eating disorders. While I can’t claim that the topic is the most significant, it held great importance to me at the time. My initial understanding of eating disorders came from Asia, particularly influenced by Korean pop music and celebrities, where the pursuit of extreme thinness became a standard of “beauty.” This misguided aesthetic led many girls to extreme behaviors regarding food and body image.
When I came to the United States, I realized that eating disorders are not limited to Asia but are a global issue. For women, the problem of eating disorders is equally serious, though it may manifest differently depending on cultural contexts. In the U.S., I observed this issue across different social strata and age groups. Whether teenagers or mature women, eating disorders could be a part of their lives.
This phenomenon made me realize that eating disorders are not just a physical health issue but a profound psychological and social problem. Through the creation of this short film, I hope to raise awareness and understanding of this issue, helping people realize that beauty is not limited to appearance but also encompasses the health and balance of the mind. I hope this short film can serve as a starting point to encourage those struggling with eating disorders to seek help and to make more people aware and concerned about this issue, thereby fostering a healthier and more inclusive society.

Zhuoqian, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am a director, producer, and production designer. Two years ago, I came to the United States to pursue graduate studies in the film industry. This educational opportunity opened the doors to the film industry for me, providing valuable resources and platforms to fully unleash my creativity and talent.
Over the past few years, I have directed and produced numerous short films, series, and commercial advertisements. These projects span a wide range of genres and styles, from documentaries exploring social issues to imaginative narrative films, from captivating short series to highly creative commercial ads. I am dedicated to telling thought-provoking stories through visual media, conveying deep emotions and ideas.
As a director and producer, I offer comprehensive film production services, covering the entire process from concept development, scriptwriting, and filming to post-production. I pay particular attention to visual effects and sound design, striving to deliver an immersive experience for the audience. The main problem I solve for my clients is transforming their ideas and concepts into impactful visual works, whether for corporate promotion or artistic expression.
What sets me apart is my meticulous attention to detail and keen perception of multicultural elements. I enjoy blending Eastern and Western cultures to create unique visual and auditory experiences. This not only enriches the layers of my work but also gives it broader appeal in the global market.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
For me, the most valuable aspect of being an artist or creative professional is the ability to express my inner emotions and thoughts through my work and to resonate with the audience. Art is a unique form of communication that transcends language and cultural barriers, touching people’s hearts on a profound level.
As a creative person, I cherish the opportunity to freely exercise my imagination and creativity. In the process of creation, I can explore new concepts, experiment with different styles, and challenge myself. This freedom not only excites and fulfills me but also continually drives my growth and improvement.
Additionally, the ability to tell meaningful stories and convey social values and humanistic care is one of the most treasured aspects of being an artist. Through visual works, I can raise awareness and provoke thought about social issues, inspiring empathy and action among the audience. This impact gives my work a profound sense of purpose and value.

Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
In my creative journey, there are certain resources that would have been greatly beneficial to my development and work if I had known about them earlier. For instance:
**Industry Networks and Communities**: Joining industry networks and communities early on can help me establish connections, gain guidance, and share experiences and inspirations with other creatives. These networks and communities not only provide valuable networking resources but also help me better understand industry trends and dynamics.
**Funding and Grant Opportunities**: Knowing about various funding and grant opportunities can help me better plan and execute projects. Many foundations, government agencies, and private sponsors offer funds to support creative projects. If I had known about these resources earlier, I could have raised funds more effectively and realized more creative projects.
**Film Festivals and Exhibitions**: Understanding the application processes and requirements of various film festivals and exhibitions can help me better showcase my work and gain more exposure and recognition. Knowing about these opportunities early on can allow me to create and submit works more strategically.
