We recently connected with Alice Mizrachi and have shared our conversation below.
Alice, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Are you able to earn a full-time living from your creative work? If so, can you walk us through your journey and how you made it happen?
Transitioning to a full-time artist was a decision I made during my final year at Parsons School of Design. While juggling waiting tables and working at Utrecht, I made a promise to myself that upon graduation, I would leave those jobs behind and pursue my artistic career wholeheartedly. This led me to secure a teaching position in art at a school in Harlem, where I balanced my time between teaching, running my studio, and engaging in public art projects. The experience of teaching art not only provided me with a stable income to support my artistic endeavors but also brought a sense of fulfillment to my life. Concurrently, my artwork started gaining recognition through sales, exhibitions, and private commissions. As my art business evolved, I integrated teaching art as a service within my offerings, seamlessly weaving it into the fabric of my creative enterprise.

Alice, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
As an artist, I maintain a vibrant studio practice where I sell and exhibit artworks globally. Additionally, I am sought after for public art projects, creating murals and sculptures for museums, private clients, corporations, businesses, and institutions. With 25 years of experience as a teaching artist, I take joy in developing art curriculum and teaching individuals of all ages. I find fulfillment in fostering a sense of community through art-making, while also cherishing my solitary studio time. The recognition I receive as a public artist is particularly meaningful, as my work becomes an integral part of the architectural landscapes it inhabits. I take pride in my ability to seamlessly navigate between these three practices, uniting them to cultivate a thriving arts business.

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
In my journey as an artist, my primary goal is to live out my passion and fulfill my dream. By staying true to my aspirations, I strive to serve as a beacon of inspiration for others to pursue and honor their own dreams. As an arts practitioner, my mission is to unite and empower individuals through creative expression. Whether it’s through teaching, showcasing my work in exhibitions, or creating large-scale murals, I intentionally use art as a tool to inspire and uplift others.

How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
I believe that society can best support artists and creatives by creating meaningful opportunities for them to showcase their talents. It is essential to recognize and value diverse art forms, while also sharing resources, investing in art, and expanding cultural opportunities to enrich our collective experience. Art has the remarkable ability to inspire change and promote healing, playing a vital role in our society. By strategically leveraging artists’ talents, we can harness their creativity to make a positive impact and enhance our communities. To further connect with new collectors, I co-founded Gallery Gurus with my friend DJ Elle, providing access to renowned artists and their work. Additionally, I recently launched Hudson Valley Mural Arts, a new public art program in New York dedicated to celebrating and commissioning public art in The Hudson Valley.
