We were lucky to catch up with Courtney Smith recently and have shared our conversation below.
Courtney, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
Cristina’s Curls was created to help my daughter, Cristina. When Cristina was born, she suffered from severe eczema and cradle cap. We took her to the best doctors and searched high and low for solutions. Nothing was working. One day as my husband and I were speaking, he suggested that I create her something, seeing how formulation and esthetics was my background. It was as if a light bulb went off. I started researching the best ingredients to combat her issues until I found the solution. Now, almost four years later, Cristina’s Curls is helping thousands of children all over the world who suffer with the same issues.
Courtney, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am a Licensed Esthetician by trade. I’ve been in the beauty industry for ten years and love anything related to skin and hair. Before starting Cristina’s Curls, I owned a day spa called, Beauty and Grace. In 2018, I shout the doors to Beauty and Grace to concentrate on growing our family. I truly enjoyed my years of being a stay at home wife and mom, but starting Cristina’s Curls has become such a fulfilling part of my life.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
A lesson that I had to unlearn was that hard work was the way to be successful. I believe that is something we all are taught or told throughout our life and although that is partially true, working smart has yield far better results than working hard.
Can you talk to us about manufacturing? How’d you figure it all out? We’d love to hear the story.
After three years of making our products in house, we are now working with a manufacturing company and it has been a game changer, but not without challenges. I spent about six months researching our vendor and doing my due diligence. Then we spent another six months making sure the formulas were perfect. It was a very tedious process, but I continued telling myself, “once it’s done, it will be well worth it.” And it was.
