Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Kristin Kunc. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Kristin thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
Formally I am interested in ‘Oil Painting’- the legacy, the tradition, the connection with history as well as ‘the craft’. I paint in a manner known as classical realism which basically boils down to– I paint what I see. Though there are many truths of what one ‘sees as well as much internal debate about what is the truth, those are discussions for another day. In my personal vision I love to paint people, things and relationships.
Some of my most profound artistic endeavors involve capturing the essence of people within the intimate confines of their homes or grounds. Whether it’s a friend, client, or cherished family member, I seek to depict moments of tranquility and introspection within these domestic spaces, both physically and philosophically. The moments shared with a friend, client, or my own son within the sanctuary of ‘the interior’ are among the most treasured and creatively fulfilling experiences I’ve encountered.
I enjoy the organic process of allowing my models and clients to meander through familiar surroundings, serving as both muse and storyteller. In observing their movements and gestures, I find inspiration for pose and narrative, weaving together a tapestry of emotions and memories. My paintings not only depict the character and spirit of individuals themselves but when working at my home studio also the timeless character of my historic home, which stands as a testament to the passage of time since its origins in New Jersey’s Dutch colonial era. Within these walls, I contemplate the stillness and temporality of existence—where some elements endure while others inevitably evolve.
Through the portrayal of my son in particular, I witness the subtle evolution of his being and place in my life across the years. Each brushstroke serves as a marker of his growth, encapsulating the fleeting moments of childhood while preserving the infinite possibilities that lie ahead.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My journey as an artist began in childhood, where I immersed myself in painting, drawing, and daydreaming. It was this early curiosity and innate talent for observation that ignited my passion for the arts and eventually led me to pursue formal training at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. Here, I delved deeply into the study of the figure and the human form, through drawing, sculpture and painting, honing my skills and refining my artistic vision.
Primarily I am a portrait painter. I offer heirloom quality portraits, of families and children, in oil, pastel, or charcoal. The settings are either at their home or amidst the serene beauty of nature. Most importantly I strive to convey the ‘spirit’ of my subjects with authenticity and grace. It is getting to know someone that you can capture their true selves in addition to how they look. My paintings are rendered with meticulous detail but I like to preserve the expressive handling of the medium by letting the paint or charcoal do what it wants to do.
In addition to my portrait work, I collaborate closely with galleries and interior designers to produce commissioned bespoke pieces to go with clients interiors. When decorating a home it is fun to incorporate the colors of say a hand knotted antique Heriz rug into a landscape that the property sits on or a conch shell into a still life that was from a treasured family trip.
What brings me the greatest satisfaction as a working artist is the opportunity to work closely with people and clients, I love understanding and interpreting their style and translating it into a custom piece of art that not only enhances their space but also brings them joy for years to come. Through personalized consultations and a commitment to quality craftsmanship, I take pride in my paintings to elevate the ambiance of any environment.

Can you share your view on NFTs? (Note: this is for education/entertainment purposes only, readers should not construe this as advice)
Buy, buy, buy! No just kidding- I think they are a pyramid scheme. But if you think I can make money with them, lets discuss.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
I can set my own schedule.
