We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Esteban Cabrera a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Esteban, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today To kick things off, we’d love to hear about things you or your brand do that diverge from the industry standard
The great part about my product, there is no standard set. In fact, it is in Mexico and parts of Europe but not in the Unites States (US). My product adds another level of guest/client experience within the hospitality industry in the US. I designed a stand that is placed next to each table at restaurants, breweries, wineries, large events, and ski resort cafeterias. They are also helpful next to chairs at nail and hair salons. These stands are helpful to put your purse, laptop bags, shopping bags, to-go bags, backpacks, hats, coats and baby bags. Currently in the industry a lot of these items are on the floor. Some restaurants offer hooks but only at the bar, but not the tables. Sometimes the solution is the back of the chair. However, many restaurants have chairs with a rounded back and don’t work well at all.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I was born in raised in a small town in Texas called Keene. I now live in San Diego, CA. I enjoy the outdoors and all that comes with it. I love to hunt, fish, hike, camp, adventure dirt-bike riding, scuba dive, snorkeling, skiing, and playing basketball. I have a 10 year old daughter who is my everything. I have 3 older sisters and 1 younger brother. My parents and siblings still reside in Texas.
I started worked in the hospitality industry at age 16. Ranging from small restaurants to upscale dining. I decided to pursue another passion in product design and went to college at age 27. I moved to San Diego to get my Degree at the Art Intiitute. Upon graduation, I was hired by a company called Dexcom. They specialize in continuous glucose monitoring for type 1 diabetics. I hold 15 design patents which greatly improved the lives of those suffering from type-1 diabetes. It was then that spring-boarded my passion to care for others and improve their lives with more convenience. During my 12yr tenure I learned I have a special gift in relationship management. After 12 years I decided to take the next chapter in my life by the horns. I was in Leon, Mexico and saw this product that stopped me in my tracks. It was a stand that was next to each table at a restaurant. This stand was used to hang your personal belongings on versus on the floor, or table, or back of the chair. This concept is nowhere to be found in the United States. Light bulb was engaged! From that moment on, I felt with my experience in hospitality and relationship management I knew this was perfect opportunity to bring this to the United States.
Can you open up about how you funded your business?
I was at the beach one day and contemplating how I would take the first financial steps to start my business. I called a close friend of mine to tell him about this business idea that I have. Not for one second was I thinking about him as the initial investor. I just wanted to get feedback on the idea of this concept. Unbeknownst to me, he had been looking at small businesses to either buy or invest in. It was almost meant to be when had the same mindset. Two weeks later he provided the first amount in capital to get it off the ground. I wouldn’t have been able to start this without him.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
SEEING THE CUSTOMER! This is huge for me. Restaurants, hair salons, nails salons, breweries, wineries, are much better served when you are there to meet them versus a cold call. I will go visit these said establishments during certain times of the day when they are slower than usual. This allows me the chance to talk about the product uninterrupted and build a good relationship. As well as introduce them to another level of guest experience and convienence.
