We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Misaki Uehara a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Misaki, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
To master nail techniques, specialized knowledge is essential. Attending nail school provides opportunities to learn from experienced instructors, observe techniques firsthand, and practice. Although it’s been quite some time since my experience, I was fortunate to have skilled instructors who possessed diverse abilities. Learning from them and putting their teachings into practice greatly influenced my own skills.
There were times during my learning journey when I felt pressed for time and even let go of it temporarily. Despite having been blessed with wonderful skills, there was a period when I felt it wasn’t suitable for me. Looking back now, I wish I had enjoyed that time spent on nails more.
The most important skill for a nail artist is precision and attention to detail. For instance, in nail art design and techniques, precise methods and attention to minute details are necessary. Additionally, for those working in nail salons, communication skills with clients and understanding their needs to provide tailored services are also crucial.
There are several factors that can hinder learning nail techniques. For example, the costs and time involved in obtaining specialized training and certification, as well as a lack of confidence in one’s skills and designs, can be obstacles. Nail techniques are more delicate and intricate than one might expect.
Misaki, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My nail art isn’t just about painting colors or drawing pictures. I always draw inspiration from various sources when creating nail designs. For example, I get ideas from furniture and its color schemes, from the buildings lining the streets, from the ocean views, and sometimes even from vibrant salads I enjoy eating!
I take inspiration from everything around me and translate it into nail art. It’s important to me to not just replicate what already exists but to “create” something new. While technical skills are essential to reach this level, the most important thing is to enjoy doing nails, both for the client receiving the service and for the artist providing it.
When you think of a nail artist, don’t imagine someone who simply applies common designs. I aspire to be a nail artist who brings out the rich sensibilities of the person receiving the service. That’s the kind of artist I want to be.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
Expressing individuality: Nail art serves as a means for individual artists or individuals with nail art to convey their identity or the message they want to express.
Inspiring others: Nail art can inspire others and stimulate their imagination and creativity.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
I feel a sense of fulfillment when I create what I was aiming for or when I surpass my own expectations. Moreover, the greatest satisfaction comes from meeting the needs of the individual receiving the nail service. Feeling the joy of meeting those needs, I also experience a sense of confidence that leads to the next step, which is incredibly rewarding.
