Susan & Sicily, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Almost all entrepreneurs have had to decide whether to start now or later? There are always pros and cons for waiting and so we’d love to hear what you think about your decision in retrospect. If you could go back in time, would you have started your business sooner, later or at the exact time you started?
Starting a business is a pivotal decision, and the timing can significantly impact the journey. Reflecting on our experience, we started our business at a time when we felt reasonably secure in our careers but hungry for more autonomy and creativity. Starting sooner might have meant diving into entrepreneurship with less experience but potentially gaining a head start on building our brand and navigating the challenges. On the other hand, starting later might have provided us with more professional connections but perhaps less willingness to take risks. Looking back, we appreciate the timing of our decision, as it allowed us to learn and grow while still having a solid foundation to support our entrepreneurial endeavors.

As a mother-daughter duo, we started our journey in the jewelry industry out of a passion for self-expression and a desire to fill a gap we saw in the market. Dissatisfied with the lack of diversity and uniqueness in mainstream jewelry offerings, we set out to create pieces that not only resonated with our personal styles but also addressed the unmet needs of others seeking distinctive and meaningful adornments.
At Susan & Sicily, we specialize in crafting jewelry that blends elegance with individuality, offering a range of pieces that celebrate creativity and self-expression. Our products are not just accessories; they are statements of personality, stories waiting to be told through precious metals and designs.
What sets us apart is our unwavering commitment to originality and inclusivity. We prioritize craftsmanship and quality, ensuring that each piece is meticulously designed and made with care. Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
A significant lesson we had to unlearn was the belief that starting our own business was a privilege reserved for a select few with specialized skills or abundant resources. We internalized the notion that entrepreneurship was a risky endeavor best left to those with extensive experience.
The backstory begins with our own doubts and hesitations. Despite harboring entrepreneurial aspirations, we constantly second-guessed ourselves, questioning whether we had what it takes to succeed in the competitive business world. It wasn’t until we confronted these limiting beliefs head-on that we realized the fallacy of our thinking.
We came to understand that entrepreneurship is not just about having the right credentials or resources; it’s about having the courage to take the leap and pursue your passion with determination and resilience. We realized that waiting for the perfect moment or circumstance to start our own business was futile – there would never be a “right” time.
Embracing this mindset shift, we took the chance and embarked on our entrepreneurial journey, leveraging our skills, experiences, and network to carve out our own path. Along the way, we encountered challenges and setbacks, but each obstacle served as a valuable lesson and opportunity for growth.

Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
By focusing on staying true to our brand and delivering exceptional quality products, we have been able to organically grow our clientele through word-of-mouth marketing and customer loyalty. Our customers know that they can trust us to deliver on our promises, and this trust is the foundation of our success in building a thriving and sustainable business.
