We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Tong Wang a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Tong, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
My creative journey is deeply rooted in my childhood experiences, where my sensitivity to the world around me first flourished. From a young age, I found myself drawn to the mysteries of the divine and the supernatural, fueling my insatiable curiosity. Despite carrying a tint of pessimism and melancholy since childhood, there has always been a flicker of romanticism burning within my soul. These contrasting elements have intricately woven themselves into the fabric of my artistic expression, giving rise to a style characterized by inner conflict and a sense of fragmentation, yet punctuated by fleeting moments of romance and beauty. It’s as though amidst the chaos and destruction, a glimmer of hope eternally persists, illuminating the darkest corners of my imagination.

Tong, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Since childhood, I’ve been studying dance, using body language to convey emotions, which became the foundation of my artistic journey. Subsequently, I explored various mediums for creation. I firmly believe that, despite the world’s uncertainty and contradictions, we can still find positive thinking and hopeful power within it. While I harbor a pessimistic attitude towards reality, I aspire to express a positive mindset through my works, inspiring the audience to reflect on their inner thoughts and embark on self-exploration.

In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
I believe society should prioritize providing more economic support and resources, such as art scholarships, grants, and artist residency programs, to help artists focus on their craft without financial worries. Additionally, providing more opportunities for people to engage with art, cultivate creativity, and appreciate aesthetics is crucial.
Establishing platforms for artists to showcase their work and exchange ideas is also important. Overall, society should recognize the value of art and creativity, encouraging active participation and support for artistic activities to promote cultural diversity and social innovation.

Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
In addition to being an artist, I also run A Space Gallery in New York. A Space provides a cutting-edge and creatively rich platform for young emerging artists in the contemporary art world. We collaborate with talented artists and brands to co-curate art exhibitions, art parties, and other art events.
