We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Darielle Phillips. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Darielle below.
Alright, Darielle thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Coming up with the idea is so exciting, but then comes the hard part – executing. Too often the media ignores the execution part and goes from idea to success, skipping over the nitty, gritty details of executing in the early days. We think that’s a disservice both to the entrepreneurs who built something amazing as well as the public who isn’t getting a realistic picture of what it takes to succeed. So, we’d really appreciate if you could open up about your execution story – how did you go from idea to execution?
This past February, I was looking for ways that I could make extra money aside from my main business and it still be something that I enjoy doing. As we all know, Valentine’s Day is in February, and only two weeks before I decided to dive into room decoration. I teamed with a few local small businesses to create packages that would include decorations, soul food, and love treats. Within that two weeks, I purchased lots of decorations to have on hand and created promotional flyers to hand out. I had never done a romantic set up before, so I got on YouTube and looked up room decorations that other businesses have done. On exactly January 3o,2022 I created my first mock room that I could advertise online for people to see my work. Around that same time I started a Tiktok account and advertised on there as well, and it played a big part of my bookings. Once the week of Valentines day came I was worried because I hadn’t got any bookings, and I had already spent lots of money investing in this idea, and once we hit February 10th I received an overflow of messages from people requesting me in the DFW. February 11th, was the first booking for the weekend out of a total of 5 bookings. Valentine’s Day weekend was VERY hectic and we ran on little to no sleep, but I don’t regret it one bit. Once I got my work out there people started to request special occasion decorations like anniversaries, birthday’s, just because set ups and more. This is how “Crowned Room Décor” was launched. I researched around to find local businesses that did similar setups and i had no luck in finding any consistent businesses that could give me some in and outs in the business. This is when I realized this is something I can bring to the Dallas- Fort Worth area. I created 3 packages that I could post as my pricing and today I am still decorating 6 months in. I’m very proud of myself for stepping out on faith and in doing that finding a new talent within myself. I’m excited to continue growing this business and providing unforgettable experiences to the DFW.

Darielle, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I was born in San Diego, California and raised in Texarkana, Tx. I moved to Arlington, Tx in 2013. Throughout my life, my parents always celebrated my siblings and I birthdays with cake and ice cream. As I got older, I took on that tradition and continued to always decorate at home for every special occasion that we have within the family. For example, birthday’s. Mother’s day, Father’s day, and anniversaries. In December of 2021 I planned and decorated my mother’s book release party, and at the time if you asked me if I thought I would be here now, I wouldn’t’ve believed you. This has always been in me, I just didn’t know it and this is how I started to design rooms. “Crowned Room Dècor” is here to give my potential customers in the DFW a different way to show their love to loved ones, a partner, or even just to love on yourself. Our room dècor can personally cater towards ANY occasion that is special to you.
Alright – let’s talk about marketing or sales – do you have any fun stories about a risk you’ve taken or something else exciting on the sales and marketing side?
This Question goes back to when I was explaining how I launched Crowned Room Dècor. When I started, I had never done any romantic set up’s, I didn’t know anything about this line of work besides my own creativity. So i completely stepped out on faith with this one. I knew it existed because I would see it online, I just needed the start up information. I wasn’t 100% confident about what I was doing, but I was determined to do it. I knew investing in this new business would be a risk because I didn’t know how potential customers would respond both local in the DFW and visitors. I told myself when starting, I rather start and fail than to never start and wonder what it would have been like. I’m really proud of my growth in the short 6 months that I launched Crowned Room Dècor and it won’t stop here.

What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
Consistency. I try to consistently post on my social media platforms at least once everyday. Of course we’re human and I miss a few days due to actually decorating or when I need to take a mental break. I believe staying consistent and keeping my social media presence up is what’s helping me grow my clientele. I also created promotional handouts to put on cars or just hand them to people that I see and let them know what I offer and how they can book.
