We caught up with the brilliant and insightful David Flores a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Alright, David thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. So, what do you think about family businesses? Would you want your children or other family members to one day join your business?

I am big fan of family businesses and have a ton of respect for those who have started them. It’s hard to find good, trustworthy help these days so having family & friends in our corner every day is a huge asset to our day to day operations.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.

My name is David Flores (Flo) and I am the Founder of Holiday Light Installations, a full service, holiday lighting & decor company.

I found my way to this industry back in college when a good friend of mine mentioned he had an uncle that hung Christmas lights to make extra money around the holidays. I loved putting up the lights at my house with my Dad as a kid and I had a lot of fun doing it I figured I’d give it a shot at earning some cash. I did around 15 houses in my first season and earned around 9k. Fast forward several years later and we are approaching the 7 figure revenue level decorating almost 300 properties each holiday season. We specialize in luxury holiday displays offering the highest quality LED lights & decorations.

What sets us apart from others is how much we care about our customers and the level of service that we provide no matter what size job we take on. Each job requires the same level of expectation and standard. Our entire team holds each other accountable on all of our projects ensuring we are always getting the job done correctly.

I am most proud of the special team that we have built here at HLI. We are surrounded by the best people that all genuinely care about one another and the goals that we set out to accomplish. Without my team the business simply does not flourish & I think that goes for almost any business. You can’t go at it alone, if you do you’re bound to fail. You need a solid foundation to help you get to the next level and our entire staff understands that and embraces the vision.

Can you share one of your favorite marketing or sales stories?

Last year we were contacted by an event company to assist them with lighting up the exterior of a 5 star hotel. This hotel is an extremely well known job within our industry as it hosts a large Christmas tree lighting ceremony every year. The previous company that worked with the hotel had the job for quite sometime, however when the event company took over they had decided they wanted to receive some other proposals.

After submitting our proposal a representative from the event company informed us that hotel management was really pushing them to sign with the previous company. We went back and forth for over a month before throwing one last Hail Mary of a message, selling my self and all I could to the event company. Letting them know that we were more than capable of completing the job & making sure if any issues were to arise that I would be the one to take full responsibility and get them taken care in the quickest manner possible.

Almost 2 months later we finally heard back and are informed that we were in fact awarded the job. It was our largest job landed to date and signed with a 3 year contract. The company that we were up against had all the cards stacked in their favor but the event company saw that we had the grit and determination to complete the job & we accomplished the goal.

Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?

Providing the highest level of customer service. That means going above and beyond for each project we take on, no matter how big or small it is. We have a standard to abide by here and every one of our crew members is bought into that. We do things the right way & don’t cut corners and I believe that has been our #1 reason as to why we have built an amazing reputation.
